You cannot be inherently Racist/Homophobic unless you meet the following:
You grew up with racist/homophobic parents. Yes, you will pick up on their behavior as all children do, however once older you can unlearn this. Sadly, parents do impact their child’s behavior and you grow up hearing racist and homophobic slurs and complaints as “normal.” It is not normal and you will learn and grow out of it.
You grew up in a racist/homophobic community. Again the “normal” of what you’re used to hearing is the above problems. Moving away or meeting people of the minority can change you if you are willing to change.
You cannot be inherently racist/homophobic if you:
Never grew up in a homophobic/racist environment.
A lot of straight/white people do not grow up in these environments.
Consider black families who adopt white kids, gay familes who end up with straight kids, etc.
white/straight kids who grow up with mixed raced families or gay family members
Those who grew up with close family friends who were poc or gay.
I grew up in a straight white christain family, and I’m a cis/straight (for the most part since I’ve only ever wanted to wife fictional characters) white girl. However, I was not exposed to hateful behavior. I was allowed to grow up and believe what I wanted to believe, leading to me dropping church and going my own way. I was also never told right from wrong regarding people’s race and sexuality, so therefore I had to learn on my own... There is no right or wrong, and I grew up treating everyone as equal. I have to laugh when someone says I’m inherently racist or homophobic... I’ve never had a friendship or known black people but I still treat them normally in public when I run into them, I don’t stare, they are human. How can I be racist If I was never taught to be racist? I see gay people, I don’t bat an eye, or maybe if they’re doing cute couple stuff I’ll go awh thats cute. We did have close family friends who were a lesbian couple, and the funny part is, I had no idea they were gay until figuring it out recently! No one told me, it was word of their wedding that tipped it off but I always kinda figured they were gay. My parents did not discriminate against them, we went to dinner often, them not telling me they were gay was not oppression, it was simply because, it doesn't matter if they are gay as a child all i needed to know was they were a normal couple like everyone else I see. It is impossible to hate by default. Humans do not naturally hate, humans learn to hate, and someone has to teach them to hate.
Unless you were taught with the first two examples above, the next person who tries to tell you you’re inherently anything, kindly tell them to go fuck themselves, cause clearly someone taught THEM how to hate instead.
