Last night we went to our penultimate antenatal class and it was brilliant!
The previous class we attended, with a very different leader, had been a bit medicalised and scary-the leader used slightly brusque language (“the umbilical stump then ROTS and falls off”?!) and handed round heavy metal forceps, canulas and catheters. As I’ve been taking the ‘hypnobirthing’ approach, I came away feeling quite upset. I know I’m a bit over-sensitive and my mind is a powerful thing, very inclined to any suggestion, which is why hypnobirthing can be very powerful for people like me.
Anyway, last night was a whole different ball game! The midwife leading was positive and friendly and whilst being really informative and instructional, she managed to speak mindfully and make us all feel excited and positive rather than apprehensive. She showed us rebozo and massage techniques, talked through the labour process and answered questions specific to the hospital we’ll be going to, it was just great.
Also pretty cool, was that this guy turned up at the end representing this charity/enterprise he’s just this year set up called EPIC dad! He hotuced how there were great resources for mums and babies but a bit of neglect for partners in our area so he set this up and arranges classes, support networks etc for the father figures. He also gave us this sweet backpack ‘goody bag’ which they got funding to produce-isn’t that sweet? The Lovely Husband broke into the Mars bars pretty quick 😂
