Daniel Swift reviews "Literature and Nature in the English Renaissance: An Ecocritical Anthology," a new book by Todd Andrew Borlik.
Shakespeare was the great poet of disrupted weather. There is the unusually hot day in Romeo and Juliet when the fight breaks out between Romeo and Tybalt; there are the disrupted seasons and rotten harvests of A Midsummer Night’s Dream...
We're doomed
The 'we' of course is all of humanity and a few other gazillion sentient beings.
And we don't seem to care given our continued proclivity to carry on with business as usual.
COP28: what a joke.
As if another talking shop was going to eviscerate the oil and gas producers or call time on our desire for more...consumption.
"Ah, you ol' misery guts."
Yes, that's right!
I am miserable but it's actually a lot worse than that. I feel a deep sense of guilt and leaden foreboding and can't help feel that the Darwinian experiment that makes us behave like we're Gods -- yes, Gods I say -- has gone desperately, terribly wrong.
Perhaps, though, this is our lot: a slow form of inexorable suicide.
In that space, I can't help but feel I've outlived any usefulness I might have had.
"Nihilist, to boot."
Guilty, I suppose.
...
Sorry that today's pithy little post isn't more upbeat but I can't write with a faux expression of hope or solution-mongering -- as if either of those will do us much good.
Blessings, Julian

Encounters at the End of the World
I image this would be his favourite movie, since it appears to be people entirely by different versions of himself. Antarctica is an continent of Werner Herzogs.
I am finally starting to feel inspirer to return to my Mythos story. Would people be interested in a story about a blind reporter who's grandmother was a Cthulhu cultist, falling in love with a Deep One, against the backdrop of the (possible) end of the world? Maybe include; radioactive shoggoths, grand theft auto-ing in an authomatic wheelchair, and cops getting eaten.
Slippages in Cleveland
Happy to say that the video work I did in collaboration with Deborah Carruthers – Slippages & Panelled/Slippages – is in a Group Exhibition at Zygote Gallery in Cleveland OH. Capturing the Aura of the Already Said, curated by Margaret Hart, is on exhibition until April 26th.
An Excerpt of the performance video with synched audio below:
