Thoughts on Jancy and Ronance? (I hate them but I'm uo for you opinion, it's whatever you want!)

I don't love j*ncy personally that's just me. I think when the show first came out I liked them along with Mileven but as the show progressed and the years went on I just didn't really like the ships anymore. Weirdly enough it was during s3/s4 when I didn't really like those specific ships anymore.

But, I was kinda of young when the show first came out so I don't think I really realized certain things. To be honest I was a pretty casual viewer of stranger things. I was definitely hooked by s2 but even more so by s3. Meaning, that I wasn't THAT much of a shipper or involved in the fandom other than watching edits. I don't think I got tumblr until 2022 and I didn't even start reading fanfiction in general until like 2020. I know this sounds completely unrelated but the point is I was very much a casual viewer and shipper (I think it was because I watched it as it came out and there was long stretches of time in between seasons) I became more of a hardcore fan as it went on.

Anyways, the real point here is jancy is really not my cup of tea anymore per se probably because of Jonathan. But, realistically in the opinion to me, they did not seem happy together. You can see hints of it in s3 based on their fights and s4 when they were kind of avoiding each other. And, in s5 when they weren't really communicating and were definitely resentful and unhappy together. This isn't to say they aren't good friends or don't care about one another but more of *I* don't think they were happy together. Of course, this is my interpretation, I can be wrong but this is how I see it.

I like r*nance A LOT more than j*ncy I can definitely see why a lot of people like it! I'm not a hardcore r*nance shipper but I like it. I can see why some people don't like it but I won't lie I like to reblog some fanart or gifsets here and there. I feel like Maya Hawke and Natalia Dyer did have really good chemistry so I can definitely see why people love to see them together. (Especially when their researching in s4 for the newspapers and such) but, I would say I'm more of a casual shipper not as hardcore shipper of stancy. Like I said before I can see why some might not like it since Nancy's Steve's Ex and Robin and Steve are best friends; my thought is I do think he would want them both to be happy but I can also see how it would also be hard for him. But, I do think that if Robin or Nancy liked each other I definitely think Robin would talk to Steve about it not to get permission but maybe to talk it out with him.

I'm gonna vent... about Nancy... again, but...

The lack of acknowledgment of how misogyny taints Nancy Wheeler's story is so irksome to me!

Like, the lip service about Nancy is soooooooo fake. Idk if it really is fake, but it has this air of performative politics without ever really getting to the freaking issues riddled throughout her narrative, which absolutely peeves me.

Seriously, I am side-eyeing anyone praising or neutral on her ending. How "in character" it is, how it makes sense. Because like! I know many wish season 2 was the end of her story! It's inconvenient for them that she continues to have an arc beyond that. Especially because it boils down to what they're shipping. (Either J*ncy or the mlm ship of the month. Hashtag not all shippers.)

Like, bruh, Nancy is sentenced to being a stepping stone for Jonathan's story by the end of the series. That's fucked. She's there for Jonathan to finally tell the truth. For him to FINALLY have a fuckass arc after, sorry, how many seasons??

But Nancy has guns, pew pew, how cool is that.

It's just, where is the critique that Nancy literally has to be lobotomized for J*ncy to work? She can't react to the pictures in any normal way. She can't have any conflicting feelings about hooking up with the guy after just breaking up with another (She sure stands still when one guy says its okay....Great momentfor Steve, terrible Nancy never gets to follow up on.)

She freaking stays with Jonathan for almost 2 years, miserable and knowing the truth, and not once says Jonathan, knock your shit off. Like Nancy literally slapped Steve in season 1. You're telling me she stands mute when Jonathan is trying to have a pissing contest with Steve. That she has no OPINIONS AT ALL! Sorry, I mean she doesn't feel like she can voice them...

Like, is it a character flaw or is it a misogynistic feature because the Duffers need to protect the ego of their self-insert and they have a resentment buried deep down for girls like Nance who ignored them in high school?? (I'm starting to lean towards the latter.)

Ugh, it's so freaking obvious they have to cut out her tongue for most of her relationships. Like, it happens with Steve too, but at least there it isn't drawn out, and she gets to tell him their relationship is bullshit. Hmm, wow, I wonder why????? But also, it was supposed to be like, "Oh, here is this character flaw for her to overcome." But she freaking doesn't! She doesn't overcome this!! It's why all the fanfics are about her learning to communicate after the series finale!

Like, are we still going to praise the "tragedy" of her relationships when she never does overcome the inability to be honest and speak up? Are we cheering on the fact that she never learns to communicate in the end because of her trauma? Is it actually good writing in season 2? Or is it the season that does the thing fans wanted?? Justice for Barb (with a half lie...), J*ncy finally gets together (even though they put everyone's life in danger because they didn't know El was alive, and the government was the only thing keeping the portal contained).

(I dunno man, sounds like season 2 was kind of a seat-of-your-pants story without much forethought.)

But by god, the fact there are people who are like, yeah, but it makes sense that her arc was she didn't know what she wanted in life...But then drops out of college to be a reporter, which is what she always wanted to do with her life, but now just shot herself in the foot without a degree. Praise thee feminism, I'm such a feminist because I approve of this girlboss ending. Barf, I'm going to be sick, let's have her surprise her friends with this information because she still can't communicate, and let's throw in a dab of how she needed to get out and experience the real world that condescending misogynist will shake their heads in agreement because NANCY WHEELER WHO LOST HER BEST FRIEND AT THE AGE OF 16 DESERVED A REALITY CHECK APPARENTLY.

Look, there probably is a more nuanced critique about her story, but I'm sorry, I'm just sick of what people refuse to say. And thats what's telling to me.

Why would you ship nancy with steve when, in real life, the actress is with the actor who plays jonathan?! It's incredibly disrespectful!

So that’s what you call distinguishing between the actors and the characters they play in the show?! WTF?! How does the fact that some cast members are a couple in real life stop them from playing couples with other people?! And if it’s disrespectful, I guess Charlie (the actor who plays Jonathan) is being disrespectful too, seeing as he’s also Team Steve/Stancy!?

Hi! I'm the person who asked the last question that you responded to. I wanted to thank you for giving such a thorough response. Hearing your perspective was very cool :)

I was also really excited to find your ask in my inbox but then also had to take a few days to think about it and prepare an answer. I'm also really glad that to don't seem to be disappointed with me taking so much time.

I think partway through I realized I don't even know what you had in mind when you talked about some jncy scenes being corrupted ronance scenes because as said it's not so easy that you could just replace them and then everything is fine (imho.) I also don't think they are secretly a coupe and the narrative just overwrote it with jncy.

Instead I do believe that that the narrative deliberately keeps them apart. Or deliberately tries to keep jncy a couple for reasons I cannot even guess. It's like every time jncy was on the verge of break-up (up until S5) something else happened to keep them together.

They got fixed all the time and ronance isn't like that and would never be like that because they actually like to spend time together.

Why I will always hate this ship.

Ronance has more problems then you realize. Let's look at them.

It's forced into anything. You won't find any fruity four media without a little bit of Steddie and Ronance. Always gotta have a little bit of gay feelings out of the blue.

They're friends. I love Nancy and Robin's friendship. But people don't realize they're just friends. Another good example is Dustin and Lucas. Friends forever that are 100% platonic.

Nancy will always be straight. If Nancy was gay they would've let that clear. Nancy's personality and character shows 0% gayness whatsoever. And no, she's not bisexual either.

Steve would be devastated. If Steve found out his platonic best friend he trusted with his life got with his ex he's been trying to make up to. He'd never recover. He would literally die. He'd go into the season 5 Dustin way type of depression.

It's annoying. After a while it just gets annoying. The headcanons. The how life would be if it happened. It's all so stupid. Like no, Nancy isn't gonna get scared by a horror movie and tell Robin to break the TV. I agree with the comments on other posts. It's a pick me ship.

And this is a problem now because everyone thinks all the characters are gay when there's little to no evidence they're gay excluding Will and Robin.

No hate towards gay people of course.
