Thrawn would not have saved the empire had he been around during the original trilogy

This is such a common line of thought I see, that his presence single handedly turns everything around (literally this is just the qui-gon lives thing but evil except the people who push this idea are thrawn stans who can never acknowledge that he is evil), usually because "tie defender is better ship therefore victory inevitable"

There are a few things wrong with this

Regarding the tie defender, aside from the fact that it was still in development a year before Yavin and that even when development was done it would take time to mass produce the craft and train pilots for it, a single weapon does not win a war, not even a "superior" one (see the tiger tanks of wwii), how you use it matters, sure thrawn could use the defenders effectively, but not every imperial commander could, and that's not even addressing how rotten to the core the empire is as a system, or how having small ships without hyperdrives is a deliberate choice by the empire to breed dependency and curb independence in pilots and that the defender flies in the face of this foundational mindset of the empire

Secondly is the nature of the fight against the empire itself

This is not a conventional war, this is a fantasy war (dressed in Sci fi), the way to win is via heroes defeating the evil overlord with friendship, trust, and a little magic

And that precisely why Thrawn lost in Rebels!

He only looked at things as a military conflict, a war of resources, strategies, and tactics, that is why he dismissed Ezra acting as a Jedi to be a losing choice, and why he was so blindsided by the end result

If Palpatine is the equivalent of Voldemort, villains who (minus supernatural powers) can be found in the extremes of the real world and do lots of damage but not really be met personally by a lot of people, then Thrawn is the equivalent of Umbridge. They’re vile, make people’s lives worse, the more authority they have the more the awfulness grows exponentially, and they’re utterly mundane.

I’ve met these people. You’ve met these people.

Meanwhile, Maul is basically Bellatrix if she wanted to murder Voldemort instead of having his babies which honestly would’ve improved the books.

The books are not actually canon, canon is a movie or TV show, books are eu, canon does not have to follow eu, but eu must follow canon, and someday those books will be thrown out entirely for a thrawn prequel show, thrawn is also not well intentioned, he's a fascist, that's how he's depicted in the shows ergo that's what he is

Hot take: a big part the reason people are desperate to deny the fact that thrawn (and by extension the chiss) is a fascist imperialist is entirely to do with the fact that they are not human

It's like a SW version of the real world "China/non western country can't be imperialist because they're not white" take you'll hear from tankies

am i the only person on this entire hellsite who actually legitimately hates thrawn? like, reading the og thrawn trilogy and watching season 3-4 of rebels was excruciating. and i don't hate him in like a "he's such a good villain" kind of way, no. i hate his guts. i wish they could have written rebels without him. idk what it is about him that elicits such a visceral response from me but i cannot look at his blue face for one second without wanting to punch it, like-
