Here's How Microsoft Holds Back Gaming

In a previous blog post, I made the fairly bold statement that Microsoft was holding back gamers and gaming software. How? By throwing money into XBox, and XBox 360.

This sounds a little silly on the surface, but consider the following areas.

XBox 360 is completely outdated hardware

The hardware that XBox 360 runs on is codenamed "Xenon".The original XCPU-ES "Xenon" manufactured at 90 nm by IBM in 2005. 2005!! And the original specs have not changed much since then. It's gotten a little smaller, and they've added a massive heat-spreader to the chip to prevent it from melting. Each core of the CPU is capable of multithreading and is clocked at ONLY 3.2 GHz. The console features ONLY 512 MB of RAM clocked at 700 MHz with an effective transmission rate of 1.4 GHz on a 128-bit bus. The memory interface bus has a bandwidth of 22.40 GB/s. Now let's talk TODAY. Today's latest chip graphics card is, well, I don't actually know. I just Googled one and picked a sweet one. How about instead of working with a triple-core graphics processor we bump things up a bit. The NVidia Tesla has 2496 seperate cores, with each core passively capable of 706MHz, meaning with Tesla is a performer! 1.17 Teraflops peak double precision floating point performance, and 3.52 Teraflops peak single precision floating point performance. Memory bandwidth is 208 GB/sec. That's is just a graphics card, mind you. That's what gamers use to drive the pixels on a screen. That's not what they use to actually PLAY the game. And yet the specs on that graphics card is actually better than the entire Xbox 360 system in its entirety! So how is Microsoft holding back gaming? Here's how! Microsoft confirms it will keep selling the XBox 360 until 2016!! The model that was outdated in 2005; outdated in hardware; outdated in graphics; outdated in memory; outdated in design... far outdated by the current technology.
