Gordon gritted his teeth as he met the onslaught, causing his jaw to clench uncomfortably. There were so damn many Combine soldiers bearing down on them now that he was beginning to have his doubts, though he was nothing if not determined, pushed onward by that indefatigable will to survive which had carried him through his darkest and most hopeless moments.

His throat felt tight, constricted almost unbearably by the protective cover around his neck. He was fighting viciously, his blood like fire in his veins, but he knew how quickly the tides could turn, and already, even with his presence on the field, just a few brave men in his command, they were not moving favorably as it was. Yet, like a man possessed, he would not stop fighting until there was no breath left in him.

He did not fear for himself, after all, but for the consequences of failure. They were too close to the outpost; they were too many in number. If he could not stand against the Combine forces now, couldn’t at least buy the rebels inside more time to escape, then those rebels would surely be wiped out entirely.

Confidence had always been something of an Achilles heel for Gordon. It was easy to overestimate one’s self when lauded as a messiah, after all. Why should he worry about a routine supply run? Sure, it might’ve lead him a smidge deeper into the woods than usual … but he had experience on his side, didn’t he?

Gordon can’t recall exactly when the gout of Bullsquid venom smatters against the lambda plate of his HEV suit – but he does remember the sting of the droplets as they sear against the lip of his neck-guard. The beast swings that damned tail into the joint of his leg, its hook sinking where the plating gave way to the kevlar against his knee. Bringing him to heel, Gordon raises his pistol and levels it in some attempt to ward it off …

Never had he been so thankful to see Adrian crashing through the underbrush.

Able to muscle the creature in submission with his assistance, it’s only after the bullsquid lays inert on the ground that Gordon realizes his proximity towards Adrian’s camp. Limping to safety, it’s much to the physicist’s ( pleasant ) surprise that the other man sets upon him with bandages and iodine. The cursing is expected, but the relative closeness they share makes Gordon duck his head and shy away from eye-contact. Their interactions had been terse at best … best to keep from upsetting him further.

Raising a hand to convey a thank-you, Gordon hisses after the attempted sign stops short – the sting of the venom against his neck forcing him to look away and bite against the pain. So much for a routine supply run.
