I find this insistence by Europeans that this pronunciation issue is an 'American only' problem so hilarious; my name *is* European (Basque), yet tons of Europeans mangle it anyways. I also hate the implication that we brown and black people in the United States are too fucking stupid to understand racism in Europe, when American racism *is* a European product.
right like! I very intentionally and deliberately worded the post to make it clear that it applied to people of colour in Europe too because I know for a damn fact that these experiences aren’t limited to North America, and also to make it clear that the issue at hand isn’t about mere mechanical ability to pronounce something or whether or not names are familiar to people (as plenty of European names that white people have are unfamiliar in the U.S.) but an issue of racist disrespect attending specifically the names of people of colour, because they are people of colour, whether those names are of European origin or not. but these people are so fucking intent upon condescending to me, assuming that I don’t know what I’m talking about, and ignoring what I’m actually saying, that they’d rather try to superciliously correct me than consider for .2 seconds the fact that I meant exactly what the hell I said
