Antique/Vintage Paintings Do people still buy and collect antique and vintage paintings? ~Yes! Depending on their taste & style How can one tell if a painting is an antique/vintage ? ...Let’s use canvas as an example first for this post~ ~Looking at the back of the painted canvas check to see how the canvas is attached. If it is tacked to the wooden stretcher it’s an earlier piece, if it’s stapled it is a newer “vintage” piece. What is a stretcher? ~On the back of the canvas, the visible wooden frame that stretches the actual canvas) ~Looking at the stretcher, an antique/vintage piece may be darker in color than a newly cut piece of wood. ~ Another way to gauge if a piece is vintage/antique is from the hanging hardware - check the actual hanging wire or frame-eye-hooks to see if there is wear or slight signs of rust. How can one tell if a painting is an oil painting or a watercolor? ~Oil paintings are on canvas or board and are not framed in glass, and you can easily identify brush strokes. ~Watercolors should always be frames under glass to protect the paper they are painted on. How do you care for oil paintings once you hang them in your home? ~If an oil painting is dusty for example, we advise using a soft bristled make-up brush to carefully brush the dust away. Please: Note never use water or any liquid domestic cleaning product to clean painted canvases. The Antique/vintage paintings featured in this post are currently for sale @EastCoastProps&Antiques.
