I wake up.

It is a special day for my people (my family). It is a day of pride (of joy, of awe, of memory, of mourning). To everyone else, it is a day like any other.

I wake up. Somewhere in the world, one (many) of my people (my family) have been shot (stabbed, bludgeoned, assaulted, kidnapped, threatened, harassed). One (many) more of my people (my family) are dead (wounded, terrified, traumatized).

It is a special day for my people. (It is a day like any other).

Maybe the media will ignore it. Maybe they will speak of rising violence, censorship, political polarization. How it affects everyone, except us. Attacks on my people (my family) can never be about us.

Some will acknowledge the crime against my people (my family), only so they can blame it on us.

[Surely, some among them are innocent and good. Such a shame that the Bad Ones cause this violence and hate.]

Some will loudly cry that they stand with us in our time of mourning. (Yesterday, they were telling anyone who would listen of our corruption and our sins; how the world would be better off without us. Tomorrow, they will do so again.)

My people (my family) are frightened, and traumatized, and mourning, and alone.

We are wounded.

We will persist.

I hope the hostages can learn to trust again. I would feel betrayal for the rest of my life knowing my government could have brought me home much sooner if they had cared to, learning how shittily the hostage families have been treated while begging for a deal, and knowing a significant chunk of the world either didn’t care about me or thought I deserved it for my nationality and religion. I also wonder if any of these women were forced to have babies in captivity and what happens to them. I doubt Hamas would want to disclose that
