Thank you to the amazing mods @datvcompanionweeks for organizing Davrin week.
Day 3: Oath/Corruption
“We’re still trying to figure out what to do with the skeletons of the archdemons,” Antoine sighed as he and Davrin leaned over the plans the Wardens had drawn up for a new keep to be built on the footprint of the old Lavendale chantry. The Wardens had been using Lavendale as a base since the fall of Weisshaupt, and the villagers seemed to take comfort in knowing the Wardens were here.
They had looked at other possible locations within the Anderfels, but most Warden bases they could add to were too remote for Evka and Antoine’s taste. Lavendale already had a supportive population for the Wardens to barter with and had served them well thus far.
It was also the closest possible base to the Cauldron.
The Cauldron was a place of nightmares: the resting place of the griffons blighted by the Wardens during the fourth blight, the dumping ground for every dangerous thing the Wardens had found not kept at Wessihaupt, and the final resting place of the first five archdemons. When Bellara had accompanied Rook and Davrin to the Cauldron, she’d talked about the evil that seemed to hang over the place.
Since the truth of the Cauldron had been discovered, the Wardens had begun slowly working to destroy most of the things stored at the Cauldron. They still weren’t sure what to do with the griffon bones yet. The biggest threat, though, were the archdemon skeletons. Those skeletons represented something of pure evil, things of such monstrous corruption that even Davrin and Rook agreed that they were perhaps the evilest thing that existed in Thedas right now.
“You know, it may be worth having Emmrich and the Mourn Watch look into it,” Davrin suggested.
Antoine lifted his head to give Davrin a questioning look.
Davrin shrugged. “If anyone’s going to be familiar with something outside of the mundane, it would be the Mourn Watch, right? According to Emmrich they all take an Oath to protect the waking world and maintain the balance between our world and the Fade. Bellara says the evil from the archdemons seeps through the Veil around the Cauldron and weakens it. If there’s anyone who can figure out how to keep the archdemon skeletons from further weakening the Veil, it would be the Mourn Watch.”
“I suppose,” Antoine frowned slightly as he considered. “But only the Mourn Watch, yes? There are some secrets the Wardens still must keep. If the wrong people learned of the location of the archdemon remains..”
“It would be a disaster,” Davrin agreed. “I think we can trust the Mourn Watch and Emmrich to be discreet. They have their own secrets.”
“Very well, will you write to them?” Antoine asked.
Davrin chuckled, “Why write when I can walk through a couple of mirrors and ask them?”
“Mm, true, the Eluvians and Crossroads have made staying in contact with our allies much easier,” Antoine agreed.
“Easier to visit friends too,” Davrin noted. He glanced up through the hole in the ceiling and caught sight of Assan playing some sort of game of tag with two of the other griffons. “Speaking of friends, what do you think of taking the griffons to Arlathan soon? I think a change of scenery and terrain might be good for them, and for their training.”
Antoine smiled, “Arlathan? Yes, I believe you are right. We will want to let the Veil Jumpers know to expect us, but Arlathan will also give them a chance to hunt for fresh game. While the villagers have begun reclaiming their farms, there is still little good wild game around Lavendale for the griffons. We must do right by them.”
“We did take an oath to do better than the Wardens of the fourth blight,” Davrin agreed.
“Let us say, three days?” Antoine asked.
Davrin smiled, “I’ll write to Bellara and Strife and let them know.”
Tagging for visibility.
