Equidistant from atoms and from the stars, D. has a great generosity to understand the human soul. A few weeks ago we were talking about life, love, desire when I quoted Antoine D'Agata, a photographer which the work I adore.
I was talking about the way D’Agata can relate love and sex to drug addiction. The way sex and love can be a stimullus that triggers our brain in a very low and basic levels and structures (mesolimbic system) and right away bring us a painful cold turkey when the stimulus ceases. I talked about how incomplete we feel and how I could perceive this on Antoine’s aesthetics. The fuzzy images, strong colors... It could also be connected to what the biology philosopher Hans Jonas said:" being an organic being, being a living being is being precarious", the reason life has the property of being metabolical, ie., have this movement of requiring from outside to inside. I also discussed about how Antoine D'Agata reminds me about our insufficiency so well represented in his images: the longing to tear the other's skin and go and live under it, the anguish that sets us in motion in a search for fusion with the other, with the other's body, with the other's flesh. The impossible union of sex that presents itself as a promise and never fulfills its purpose and the painful realization of our ontological discontinuity.
D. looked at me, took a sip on his beer and said: ”Why the heck L., you act like a scientist with your feelings? Be the scientist just at Ulisboa, please. Why don’t you act like L., the sensitive being I know? Why do you objectify love and try to understand it instead of feeling it? Why don’t you try to subjectivate love instead of objectivate love? And no, sex there is nothing to see with drug addicition. Erase the barriers subject/object (your main dream on life right?) when you are at least talking about living love. In your therms so: act like a phenomenologist, not like a scientist. Be a lover, not a thinker. And nah, drug addiction is static and desire is volant, it is a movement, it changes, moves itself, it will be never there.” I gave a huge, huge laugh, choke with a sip of my craft beer and we changed subject.
