Anton Bitel’s authority on the art of alliteration is absolutely astounding in “Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs 2,” giving readers beauties like “rapid recapitulation,” “sentient snacks,” and “cornucopia of crackpot ideas.”
Where some critics would leave their best work for what they would consider more “important” films, Bitel gives you his prime stuff here. His prose is absolutely radiant, sparkling with sumptuous syntax and word choice that will leave you breathless. Bitel breaks out every food reference in the book (and some that aren’t even in the book), which, in a lesser artist’s hands, could be cloyingly cutesy.
Bitel’s culinary quotations are so pitch-perfect they’ll leave you smiling (and a bit peckish.)
His artistry never sags, always forging ahead at a breakneck clip, hurdling headlong through clever turns of phrase and delectably didactic critique. In fact, the only argument one could level against this piece is that it’s much too short for Bitel’s talents to fully find firm footing. This meal, scrumptious as it is, ends before dessert, and it’s a shame his talents aren’t given more room to run.
This is one of the best reviews anyone’s written for Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs 2, so put on your bib and prepare to dig in.
