Wedding roses, 1913 - by Anton Faistauer (1887 - 1920), Austrian
Title: Still Life with Coffee Cups Artist: Anton Faistauer (Austrian, 1887-1930) Date: 1912 Genre: still life Movement: Expressionism Medium: oil on canvas Dimensions: 71.5 cm (28.1 in) high x 74.5 cm (29.3 in) wide Location: Leopold Museum, Vienna, Austria
Though he had been trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, Anton Faistauer soon rejected Academicism in favor of a freer, more expressive style of painting. He was instrumental in founding two modernist groups in Austria: Die Neukunstgruppe (1909) and Der Wassermann (1919). (In between, Faistauer had done mandatory military service during WWI -- but unarmed, as he was deemed "unsuitable" to carry a gun.)
In this still life, the influence of Paul Cézanne on Faistauer can clearly be seen. A seemingly disorderly assemblage of cups, pitchers, and fruit on a tabletop is rendered with loose brushwork against a brown background.
