Description

The painting's narrative is based on the events of the 10th-century Russian internecine war, as described in the Rus' chronicle. The principal figures are Prince Vladimir Svyatoslavich of Novgorod and Rogneda, daughter of Prince Rogvolod of Polotsk. The action depicted on the canvas is set in Polotsk, in the princely chambers of Rogneda.

Rogneda of Polotsk (962–1002) is the Slavic name for Ragnhild, a Princess consort of Rus'. She was the daughter of Ragnvald who came from Scandinavia and established himself at Polatsk in the mid-10th century.
