Finished one of the final books for 2024. It’s been a long time coming. I got this book back when it released in 2017 and it sat in my car, survived two car wrecks and the transfer between 2 new cars since. I don’t know why I kept it in my cars all these years, I used to read it at oil changes but never made it far. Finally took it out and restarted it and finally finished it 6 years later.
All The Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr is a fictional story set between Germany and France during World War 2. The storyline switches between multiple points of view and bounces back and forth between before the war and during.
I liked this book because it had many main characters and constantly moved settings and between characters. It was fairly entertaining and kept the storyline moving. The characters were likeable and believable. I also like that for a World War II book it was not too dark, grim, or gruesome like a lot of stories are regarding this time period.
I didn’t care for the last 2/3rds of the book. I really didn’t care for the ending. I almost felt like the last time jump and the ending of Werner’s storyline negated the entire beginning of the story. Like it defeated the book of having any type of purpose. Also because of this, the last half seemed to move a lot slower.
I don’t have Netflix but I did hear it was made into a series. I might give it a try.
★★★ Pretty good for a war story, not sure I believe it deserved a Pulitzer.
