The cozy fantasy novel has become quite popular in the last few years, bringing joy and comfort to many while also possibly ruining literature forever, depending on which moral panic you subscribe to. As the name implies, these stories eschew high-stakes battles in favor of good food, relaxing environs, and loving relationships.
In other words, wish fulfillment is the name of the game. But how that wish fulfillment is delivered matters a lot. Are the secluded cabins immersive enough that readers can imagine themselves there? Does the lack of exciting fight scenes mean readers will get bored before the wish fulfillment can even take hold? For that, we must turn to the story’s ANTS!
