Antstream: The “Netflix” of Retro Gaming
(Before I start talking about this, I want to make clear this isn’t an ad. I really think this is just an awesome idea)
I don’t show public support for crowd-funded projects often, but this project was so good, it deserves universal praise. It’s also one of those concepts when you hear it, you say “why didn’t I think of that?!”
This is Antstream; simply put, it’s Netflix for retro gaming.
You download the app to your device (PC, XBOX One, phone or tablet), pay a monthly subscription fee and you have unlimited access to 2000+ games with achievements, leaderboards, and multiplayer. All the games are legal with no emulators to deal with, so legality isn’t an issue.
As of this post, the project is 79% funded with 16 days to go. I feel like it’ll be fully funded before the deadline, it’s just too great of an idea to fail.
You can find a full list of launch games here. Lots of arcade classics such as Double Dragon, Fatal Fury, Ikari Warriors (not the crappy NES port) and a host of others. The team behind Antstream are promising more games after launch.
My only gripe is no Switch port, which is not surprising because Nintendo hates me. I can easily get this on my other devices, but the seamless transition of going from portable play to TV would make this so much sweeter.
It may be a tall order, but I’d love to see some licensed titles like Atari’s Batman, or Konami’s Cowboys of Moo Mesa. WWF Wrestlefest would be the bomb, but I’m not holding my breath.
