Coming soon: Hotel Mumbai

Il Toronto Film Festival di quest’anno ci ha regalato un’interessantissima conferenza stampa sul film Hotel Mumbai, girato in India e Australia tra 2016 e 2017, in uscita al cinema nei primi mesi del 2019.

Il film racconta la tragica vicenda dell’attentato terroristico a Mumbai del novembre 2008, incentrato sull’iconico Taj Mahal Palace Hotel, in cui persero la vita 164 persone e 308 rimasero ferite.

All’incontro in diretta streaming hanno partecipato lo sceneggiatore John Collee, il regista e co-sceneggiatore Anthony Maras e gli attori protagonisti Dev Patel, Armie Hammer, Nazanin Boniadi, Anupam Kher, Tilda Cobham-Hervey e - come ben sapete - il nostro amato Jason Isaacs.

Sono molte le anticipazioni emerse nell’incontro, coinvolgente e denso di contenuti.

Il regista Anthony Maras introduce subito il tema del film: la resilienza. Persone che non avevano nulla in comune, ritrovatesi in una situazione di estremo pericolo, sono riuscite a trovare insieme il modo di sopravvivere. La resilienza è rappresentata anche dallo stesso Hotel: dopo sole tre settimane dall’attacco, incredibilmente, è stato riaperto il ristorante, e dopo ventuno mesi l’intero hotel ha ripreso completamente le sue funzioni.

 Lo sceneggiatore John Collee parla di quanto è rimasto colpito, ascoltando le testimonianze dei sopravvissuti dello staff, nel sentirli definire l’hotel la loro casa: alcuni di loro avevano già lavorato lì per venti o trent’anni al momento dell’attentato. Metà delle vittime furono proprio membri dello staff. Molti, malgrado avessero avuto la possibilità di scappare e tornare dai propri cari, non furono capaci di abbandonare colleghi e ospiti al loro destino.

 Jason Isaacs nel suo primo intervento afferma che i personaggi da loro rappresentati sono persone completamente diverse per provenienza, ceto, mestiere; alcuni di loro sono manager, persone che gestiscono i più alti livelli del potere, “tra gli individui più egoisti e venali del pianeta”, ma queste loro differenze svaniscono nel momento in cui si realizza la cosa più catastrofica che potessero immaginare. Anzi, si uniscono nel fronteggiare il dramma. La storia che sono andati a raccontare ha qualcosa di universale, parla di una verità di fondo sul comportamento umano.

Il regista spiega che gli attentatori hanno programmato attacchi dinamitardi coordinati in diversi punti della città, facendo credere di essere molti più di quanti non fossero, e deviando l’attenzione dal vero obiettivo. Nessuno è stato in grado di capire cosa stava realmente succedendo. Per questo motivo i soccorsi sono stati così tardivi – l’attacco è andato avanti per quasi quattro giorni – e bisogna considerare anche che al momento la polizia locale non disponeva di una task force specializzata.

 Le reazioni del pubblico agli screening in anteprima sono state molto positive e forti, a quanto pare. Jason racconta di aver visto lo screening in un piccolo cinema di Londra, “insieme alle mie figlie di 13 e 16 anni, e a mia suocera che è sulla settantina… e che non gradirà che abbia rivelato la sua età!” e con persone dell’industria dello spettacolo, che “notoriamente sono dei cinici”. Se prima del film controllavano impazientemente il cellulare, poco dopo l’inizio erano già tutti completamente assorbiti, incapaci di trattenere lacrime e singhiozzi. “Ma ne siamo usciti tutti rinvigoriti” come dopo la visione di quello che per lui è film motivante per eccellenza, Dirty Dancing.  “La cosa migliore che un film può fare è mettere in connessione le persone, farle dialogare”. Come ha affermato altre volte, Jason ritiene che quando un film stimola il dialogo significa che ha fatto il suo lavoro. L’intervistatore concorda con lui che l’esperienza del vedere un film al cinema insieme a tante persone, anche sconosciuti, muove in noi qualcosa di profondo e atavico. Non è la stessa cosa che fruirne in solitudine.

 L’attrice Nazanin Bodiadi dice di aver partecipato a una visione in anteprima seguita da una Q&A con alcuni di loro, molti dei quali (pubblico e attori) erano visibilmente commossi. Lavorare a questo film è stata un’esperienza emotivamente impegnativa per molti di loro.

 Uno dei punti più coinvolgenti e drammatici pare essere il momento in cui il personaggio interpretato da Armie Hammer rivela il suo sconvolgimento e la profondità del rapporto con sua moglie dicendole “Non mi guardare”. A stemperare il momento di commozione sul palco arriva veloce la battuta di Isaacs: “Credetemi, una cosa del genere [Armie] non l’ha mai detta in vita sua!”

 Il veterano attore indiano Anupam Kher racconta che sua madre, anche se non parla inglese, ha voluto comunque vedere il film. Si è talmente commossa che per la prima volta gli ha fatto un complimento come attore, al suo cinquecentounesimo film! “Chiedetegli quanti film ha fatto da quando abbiamo finito di girare questo” ha detto Jason. “Sedici!” è la risposta.

Anupham risponde poi alla domanda di una giornalista dicendo che in realtà una produzione indiana aveva già fatto un film su questa storia, ma che è davvero orrendo. A volte chi produce cinema e televisione vuole solo lucrare su una tragedia, e l’attore ritiene che sia andata così in quel caso, mentre questo film è non potrebbe essere più diverso. Incentrato sulla vicenda umana, lontano dai toni sensazionalistici, cerca di dare valore a ogni vittima in quanto persona. “Anche Ghandi è stato girato da degli stranieri, e sono entrambi due grandi film!”

 Dev Patel era all’estero per lavoro nel 2008, a seguito del successo di The Millionaire. Quando è tornato a Mumbai è stato uno shock per lui vedere la città ancora in fiamme. Dev racconta di come sia stato terribile rendersi conto che questi terroristi erano poco più che ragazzi, giovani come lui, ma armati e pronti a tutto… e nel bel mezzo del suo sentito racconto a Jason suona il cellulare! “Sarà probabilmente tua suocera che ci guarda in streaming” dice l’intervistatore, “Vorrà dirmi di smetterla di fare battute del cavolo!” risponde lui, nell’ilarità generale. Poi, non visto dagli altri sul palco – tranne che dallo sceneggiatore, che se la ride sotto i baffi – lancia il telefono fuori scena con un gesto liberatorio... (ogni scusa è buona per comprarsi il nuovo iPhone, vero, Jason?!)

Dev  continua dicendo di aver letto un articolo su una cosa simile successa durante l’attacco delle Twin Towers. Alcune persone hanno dovuto far fronte comune per resistere ai terroristi. “Penso che questo legame umano sia poco rappresentato nel cinema; come diceva Jason, questo film può aiutare le persone a rompere gli stereotipi ed educare il pubblico a una cultura della condivisione.”

 Armie Hammer, come fa notare l’intervistatore, ultimamente ha recitato in diversi film molto interessanti e originali che hanno saputo spingersi oltre le barriere. Alla domanda “Cosa ti ha spinto a partecipare a questo film?” lui ha risposto che è stata decisamente “La sceneggiatura, che è la più coinvolgente che abbia mai visto. È incredibile, le più intense due ore e 15 minuti che abbia mai vissuto nella mia vita”. “Vedendo il film ho dovuto mettere in pausa, a un certo punto, e riprendere fiato prima di finire!” È la storia quasi incredibile di persone che sono riuscite a sopravvivere, ma anche i terroristi non sono figure bidimensionali, nel film. Erano persone, anzi ragazzi, che sono stati indottrinati e hanno subito un lavaggio del cervello. Erano motivati, decisi, e il film cerca di farci vedere cosa hanno dovuto passare loro stessi, per arrivare fino alla decisione di compiere questo gesto orribilmente violento. “Questa storia è pregna di umanità in ogni aspetto.”

 Lo sceneggiatore John Collee e il regista Anthony Maras intervengono spiegando che hanno avuto accesso alle trascrizioni delle conversazioni tra i terroristi e la polizia, e anche alle trascrizioni e alle confessioni scritte di uno degli attentatori che è sopravvissuto ed è stato incarcerato; tonnellate di documenti da cui è stato possibile ricostruire cosa ha spinto questi ragazzi ad agire in questo modo. Il film cerca di raccontarlo.

Nel film ci sono anche momenti più leggeri, una scelta studiata per evitare che gli spettatori potessero essere troppo provati dalle emozioni negative, ma il regista afferma che si tratta di un elemento realistico: i sopravvissuti che hanno potuto intervistare hanno testimoniato che l’umorismo per loro è stato un mezzo indispensabile per ridurre la tensione psicologica durante le lunghe ore – e giorni – dell’attentato.

Jason racconta poi di come abbiano creato un legame tra loro del cast, dicendo che non capita spesso di non volersi salutare finita la giornata di riprese, anzi voler anche andare a mangiare insieme e passare altro tempo con i colleghi. L’attrice Tilda Cobham-Hervey dice che la passione per questa storia così drammatica li ha accomunati; Anupham Kher aggiunge che a creare il loro legame ha contribuito anche l’aver passato del tempo con i veri sopravvissuti. La loro esperienza li ha toccati. Kher sente di aver avuto non solo una grande opportunità come attore, ma anche di aver creato una nuova famiglia che lo accompagnerà d’ora in avanti.

Anthony Maras racconta che invece l’interprete di uno dei principali attentatori non ha voluto familiarizzare con il resto del cast, ed è rimasto per la maggior tempo in disparte, cercando di rimanere nella parte. Ha stupito anche uno dei produttori americani che, presentatosi senza ottenere da lui altra risposta che un inquietante sguardo fisso, ha chiesto “Ehi, che problema ha questo tizio?”. Una grande performance, secondo il regista. L’attore avrebbe anche preso Jason a pugni e calci. “They kicked the living shit out of me” commenta lui divertito.

Nel suo ultimo intervento Jason fa un’altra riflessione sulla sceneggiatura e sul senso del film. Affermando che normalmente in questi film con ostaggi a un certo punto le vittime riescono a rubare la pistola e sopraffare gli aggressori, sostiene che la storia di questo film “è reale e diversa”. “Non si tratta di un atto di vendetta, o di reagire alla violenza con violenza, ma di persone che volevano soltanto sopravvivere e ci sono riuscite accorgendosi che insieme funzionavano meglio, pensavano meglio, e potevano proteggersi a vicenda. Si sono assunti dei rischi personali per farlo, hanno rischiato per il gruppo”. Si parla di resilienza, o resistenza, ed essa consiste in pratica di piccoli atti di gentilezza e di sostegno reciproco.

“Una delle ragioni per cui volevamo passare del tempo insieme era perché passavamo tutto il giorno a interpretare personaggi terrorizzati”, continua Isaacs. “Non ci credi veramente ma, insomma, qualcosa ti rimane dentro. Si tratta di personaggi i cui atti di coraggio sono di vero coraggio perché sono terrorizzati”. Persino il suo personaggio, che a sentire lui sembrerebbe un tipo tosto, “uno che è abituato a gestire questo genere di cose”. “Il fatto straordinario è che in una situazione come quella hanno continuato a fare del proprio meglio per gli altri, e ad aiutarsi, nonostante fossero quasi fuori di sé dal terrore.”

 Che dire? Mi hanno decisamente convinto alla visione. Voi che ne pensate?

Tumko Meri Kasam Movie Review 2025: An inspiring story of truth, love, courage, struggle and hard work

Introduction

Tumko Meri Kasam, a Vikram Bhatt-directed emotional drama, was released on March 21, 2025. This film is both entertaining and message-driven. That the truth cannot be repressed, and that even if it takes time, it will eventually be revealed to the world. The film's tone is drama and the theme is truth and justice. According to the trailer, it appears exactly as seen on the screen. This movie is based on the true story of Dr. Ajay Murdia., the founder of Indira IVF, and his wife Indira Murdia, who named the company after his wife Indira. Anupam Kher, Esha Deol, Adah Sharma, Ishwak Singh, Sushant Singh, Durgesh Kumar and Meherrzan Mazda portray the film's lead roles.

But what happened in his life that landed him in court? Will his wife accompany him at such a tough time? Who is the individual who has got him involved in the legal case? Performance and Character

Anupam Kher, who played Dr. Ajay Murdia, really grasped his character and connected with the audience's emotions through his incredible and excellent acting. There isn't much more to say about him that he is one of India's finest actors. He is a skilled actor; some of his scenes include his kids embracing him in the lift and crying to Kishan, and a dramatic sequence in the courtroom in which both of them cry while looking at each other. His chemistry with the other characters was also exceptional. His acting was consistent from beginning to end. Ishwak Singh's performance as young Dr. Ajay Murdia can be described as good. His acting is refreshing. His emotional episodes have turned out well, such as when he achieves his first achievement and goes to his wife. The second is when Kishan comes to Ajay Murdia for a job, and the third is when he tears in front of his wife in the temple that he cannot live without her. His speaking style, body language, and facial expressions are natural. His chemistry with his wife is also great. He has previously had numerous opportunities to showcase his acting abilities on screen, including Tum Bin 2 (2016), Veere Ki Wedding (2018), Malaal (2019), and Tumse Na Ho Payega (2023), and he has not disappointed. Adah Sharma performed admirably as Indira, a wife, on film. There is no denying her acting abilities. If she is given similar roles in the future, she will be able to demonstrate her acting abilities effectively on screen, as she did in her 2023 release The Kerala Story. She knew her character well, acted with emotional depth, and she looked stunning. Some of her emotional scenes are incredible. Esha Deol's acting as a Meenakshi as a lawyer can be described as mediocre. I didn't notice any strength in her performance. Her delivery of dialogue, body language, and facial expressions appeared to be very weak. She appears to be acting similarly to her mother, Hema Malini. Durgesh Kumar's performance as Kishan is amazing. He's left his imprint in a few scenes. Sushant Singh and Meherzan Mazda, among the supporting players, contributed to the story's progression and performed well.

Direction

Vikram Bhatt directs Tumko Meri Kasam 2025 movie. He has previously directed many popular films, including Fareb (1996), Ghulam (1998), Kasoor (2001), and Raaz (2002). All of these films were successful, with Raaz (2002) standing out as a box office hit. He is regarded as a master in horror filmmaking. He emotionally portrayed the film's plot, but at times it appeared that the script was veering off course, yet he was able to get excellent performances from all the performers. Not only that, but he also managed to keep the film's vibe consistent. However, he struggled to keep up with the film's fast pace. He has directed certain moments very successfully by combining music, sound, editing, and good cinematography. To some extent, he attempted to show something fresh in the film, and he succeeded in meeting the audience's feelings and expectations.

Story-Screenplay-Dialogue

The film's story, screenplay, and dialogue were written by Vikram Bhatt. The film's story unfolds in both flashback and present time. The film's scenes proceed slowly, which makes it difficult to advance the tale. Some sections were well-written, with effective dialogue that made an impact. The story was successful in demonstrating something fresh, as intended. The screenplay can be considered average. The dialogue appears to be naturally tied to the film's story.

Cinematography

Naren. A Gedia's cinematography in the film's appearance may not be spectacular, but several scenes have been expertly framed with varying angles and speeds in mind to preserve its charm. Some parts in the film appear manufactured. The butterfly image also conveys a significant message, which represents love. The aerial views in the film are good, but the locations and production design are not shown well.

Editing

Kuldeep Mehan's editing of the film is loose in numerous sections. The scenes are also beautifully interwoven. The film is quite long. The picture moves slowly in the first half, but it appears to pick up in the second half. The editing makes the changes between the flashback and present timelines more evident. The editing of the film is congruent with its tone and content.

Production design

Naushad Memon's sets and locations appear plausible within the context of the plot, but the colors and visual components do not correspond to the story's subject and atmosphere. The production design can also be described as constant, which helps to make the situations believable. The severity of the conclusion was unaffected by the courtroom set designs.

Costume design

Priyanka Mandada's Costume design in the film is appropriate for the concept and tone of the plot. The characters' attire reflects their personalities, looking generic and inspired.

Background score.

Prateek Walia's background score enriches the tone of the tale and scenes, suits the film's topic and mood, and has an impact on the emotionally charged parts.

Sound design

Shantanu Akekar and Dinesh Uchil's sound design is effective; it syncs with the visuals, and the dialogue is audible.

Music

Prateek Walia composed the music for the film, and some songs, such as Ishqa Ishqa, are highly beautiful, and romantic, and composed with the voices of Neeti Mohan and Abdul Sheikh. Yasser Desai's voice adds romance and melody to Chahun Tumko Aise. Berang, performed by Abdul Sheikh, and the title track Tumko Meri Kasam, sung by Neeti Mohan and Papon, are both well-composed and melodious.

Vikram Bhatt and Shweta Bothra wrote the film's songs, which are profound and appropriate for the mood of the film.

Climax

The film's climax is dramatic and brings tears to the eyes. The victory of truth is demonstrated, This is an extremely emotional scene.

Those who enjoy good acting, true storylines, and emotional films should see it.

Social message

What can be said about the suffering, emotional trauma, and social humiliation of women who do not receive a result despite spending lakhs of rupees on infertility treatments? Clinics should take notice to this; who knows what individuals are doing to save lakhs of rupees? Whether or not a child is involved is another question, but leaving that aside, those who spend a lot of money yet obtain no results have wasted lakhs of rupees. As a result, some clinic owners should consider returning the money to them, which would send a very positive message to society.

Flaws

When Indira knew that her husband was in the hospital, her parents were not shown accompanying her. Every songs has been played in the background.
