MAMMATUS OVER CHRISTCHURCH The Nor'west flow over the Southern Alps formed Mammatus Clouds over Christchurch, New Zealand when this photo was taken by David Hardy on 17 Feb 2014. Mammatus Clouds form in sinking air, as opposed to rising air; this causes the clouds to puff upwards. Mammatus clouds often occur under a cumulonimbus (also known as anvil cloud) but can also occur beneath cirrocumulus, altostratus, altocumulus or stratocumulus clouds.
