It often saddens me to see great players of the past fade into obscurity.  I was reminded recently of Anypro, a Protoss player for the early Prime.WE team, referred to by many as the "Homer Simpson" Protoss for his prominent upper lip, although I never found the name to be very fitting -- in my opinion he's better known for blocking his own Nexus placement whilst Forge expanding in a televised PvZ match.

I pulled up and watched a match from the best goddamn tournament that ever was, the GSL Super Tournament.  Brought back a lot of memories of gateway expands on the classic map Xel'naga Caverns:

PvZ: anypro's 7 gate 1/1 + obs build

One of my favorite builds in PvZ. Another build I'll try to make a video on when I have time!

Start off with the standard rules of a forge fast  expansion, and then:

16 Nexus

16 Forge, Probe, Pylon

20 Cannon (2 if its a tricky map for forge expand)

23 Gateway, gas, gas

gas, core

Warpgate, Sentry

39 +1 attack upgrade

boosts used only on Probes and a couple on Warpgate

4th gas

Warpgate upgrade half done => add 6 gates

Start chrono boosting +1 attack and immediately start +1 armor, which you continue to chrono boost

Robo

your army starts moving out as you get your first huge warpgate round. you should have about 9 sentries, no more than that, perhaps some zealots based upon how many lings you see, and then lots of stalkers. your probe count should be right around 50, with a low of 48. if you have 60, your attack is probably too slow to do any damage.

PvZ: Anypro's 7 gate vs JYP's 7 gate

I've been putting in a lot of thought to anypro's forge fast expand into 7 gate 1/1 with obs timing, for a long time. When I first saw it against JulyZerg severa GSLs ago, I was blown away by it's power. I decided to play around with it a little bit, thinking it would be a nice all-in to add to my bag of tricks. What happened next shocked me. I had only seen it once vs JulyZerg, so only had knowledge of 1 branch of how to play it. After doing the build several times, I started to learn the ins and outs of how to properly execute the build in different circumstances. A realization hit me like a ton of bricks: I no longer believed the build to be all-in. As long as I made all my choices correctly during the 7 gate attack, I was finding it very easy to transition into higher tech, continue my upgrades, and take a 3rd base. The build functioned almost like a "reset button". If Zerg had been a bit too greedy, you would kill their third. Hell, if they made poor decisions while you were killing their third, sometimes you could also run them over. I was totally in love with the build. And then two things happened. 1. Zergs started to take a super quick 3rd base vs forge expand, giving them more units when the timing hit. 2. Infestors got a serious buff, bringing in the age of Infestor-ling with such power that the timing could simply fail to a tight Infestor build order. Between these two things, my now-favorite followup was no longer worth doing. And then the mighty nerf hammer hit Infestors. Doing less damage to both light and armored units, I decided it was time to give a slightly modified anypro 7 gate a try (I get a few more probes out by reallocating a few chronos). After playing with it on the Korean server for a bit, I became convinced that there was something there again, and that if executed just right, it could be a good build again. And then TSL played Prime in the GSL team league! JYP crushed 3 Zergs in a row in the first 3 matches. The first game was a really interesting Sentry/Warp Prism harassment game, while the second two looked very familiar. JYP went for a forge expand into 7 gate timing, which, while it looked very much like anypro's old build, had a few differences. The differences (#1 refers to the anypro style, #2 refers to the JYP style): #1's 3rd gas goes up at the same time as the core, #2's goes up after the 3 additional gates. When the Warpgate upgrade is half done, #1 adds 6 gateways, #2 adds 3. Around ~50ish supply, #1 gets a Robo, #2 gets a Twilight. #2 goes immediately into +2 attack, whereas #1 goes for +1 armor. Both get their second tech tree during the attack. #1 has slightly more units during the first push out, but also a slightly higher sentry count. Now, both these builds are really, really cool. #1 is prepared for Burrow, #2 has more finishing power. In the current metagame, it seems that build #2 is the better build, but that very well could change. I've been toying with #1 for a long time, and now will have to toy with #2 as well. It's pretty hard right now to wrap my head around which build will be better in the coming months.
