i was going to talk abt this in an ask but it went on a tangent so LET’S TALK ABOUT CRITICAL THINKING & SUSPENSION OF DISBELIEF IN STARGIRL !
in terms of script, stargirl is all suspension of disbelief in a more humanity-focused way. suspension of disbelief involves a hold on critical thinking in order to “enjoy” (in a loose term) the media and it holds true when we’re faced with the cosmic staff (how does the energy from a star get to the staff? how is it sentient?) and the hourglass (how does it sense the dna? how does it give rick super strength?) and even yolanda’s suit (you get the gist of these critical thinking questions by now) in order to believe the surreal. i worked with suspension of disbelief (sod from here on out) a lot in theatre because it’s a relation to the hold WE have on reality, and as a tech kid, there’s a very thin line to walk with being an audience member & being involved in the show, but i won’t go into it too deeply bc this isn’t a theatre matter (this is my evidence that i’m qualified to talk on this. in case u couldn’t tell.)
esp with media such as stargirl, there’s a thin line to walk between sod & critical thinking because nothing should be consumed without that critical thinking, even though sometimes for the sake of plot that criticism must be displaced. i think in terms of the staff, courtney’s suit, the hourglass, goggles, yolanda’s suit, the whole superhero thing, sod generally goes really well. we know that it’s fiction, magic, that some things can’t be explained. (no matter how much i talk about the staff & i come up with my own explanations for it, the sod is STILL there because i’m aware the staff can’t be explained in terms of OUR reality)
the plot itself (along w things like character development & plot devices) SHOULD be critiqued without sod. because of how those devices & developments interact and intertwine with OUR reality, we’re able to fully immerse & criticise that aspect of the work.
when those two aspects (superhero aspects & plot) intertwine in such places as the dinner party (what the ask was originally about but kept in as an example), it starts to get really murky in terms of what is “right” and how far our suspension of disbelief should go. criticisms & predictions aside, this murky water is where the real wide spread of opinions comes in, because without getting too deep, our perception IS our reality, and how we interact in this reality affects our views on media and the media affects our views on reality, which is why it’s so essential that we use critical thinking when evaluating the plot & these murky aspects of any media. it’s important that we note our own perceptions (realities) and our own biases when it comes to evaluating & critiquing media.
not to quote myself but “i can’t hand my experiences [to someone else to] see my viewpoint, nor can i remove their biases, or my own, from the interpretations”, which is why it’s so important to view things through the lenses of others & their experiences; it’s important to evaluate what the writers & creators meant by each scene, character, plot, as well as what they indirectly IMPLIED but didn’t mean. the suspension of disbelief can only go so far, and even then, we have to filter and think for ourselves instead of taking what the writers imply & write as truth.
this is just a really, really long way of me saying that critical thinking is essential but also that suspension of disbelief isn’t a wholly bad thing and the two are able to exist at the same time !!
the fever dream that was buddie at the bachelor party but also the interviews at the start of the season? I miss it and whatever they had planned or not planned lol
