i'd always assumed that tom read about nero and sporus in the book that he got "so that he'd have something to read in prison" - and simultaneously i've always thought it was kinda odd for him to have already started reading it. not SO odd, but a little odd. But... it's just occurred to me: what if tom actually heard about nero and sporus elsewhere, perhaps just on a google search, perhaps he's known it for years and it's had a long time to twist into the version of the story he tells greg, and that's WHY he got the book on the romans specifically? in hopes that he would be able to read about more ancient homosexual relationships and practices, and that these could comfort him while he sat alone on his prison bed?
