Hey Peach, I just want to say that I admire you a bunch! Your writing is incredible and hilarious, you answer all the ridiculous asks with such kindness and grace (like… you always front with them and never seem to let them get to you), and I know the p-word has been rough for you, but you’re still kicking ass! Idk I just want to let you know you seem like a super cool person and I respect your poise and perseverance a lot. :)
🥺🥺🥺 stoppp u know I get emotional easily these days !! man ur gonna make me cry 😭
Okay, now that you have me on the damn Billy babysitting Holly train, I want to talk about what it would be like for him and Steve to move away together and come back ten years later.
I don’t think Billy would even expect Holly to remember him, because she was, what, six when they left in ‘86? And yet the moment he and Steve walk through the Wheeler’s front door, there she is, (not so) little Holly Wheeler jumping into his arms like it hadn’t been a day since he’d gone. And something about her would just feel so familiar and so much like home even if she wasn’t six years old anymore.
He’d greet her with a ‘You grew up good short stack- or should I say tall stack, my god.’ And the Wheeler women weren’t a particularly tall group, but Holly must have snatched up some of the good genes because she had to be at least 5′8.
Holly would just laugh it off, pulling out of the death grip bear hug that they had pulled each other into. Billy would follow up his last statement with:
‘It’s been so long, how old are you now, like, eleven, twelve-?’ Only to be cut off by a fist to the bicep, not so much that it hurt, but it was firm and forceful.
‘I’m sixteen, or is the memory loss already kicking in, grandpa?’ And this would have Steve laughing his ass off, leaving Billy in shock. He wondered if the few years he had with Holly made her this way, he liked to think he had at least a little bit of impact on her outcome.
‘Wow, Holls, who babysat you after me, Max?’ He would be halfway kidding, halfway dead serious because she spoke exactly like he would expect his own sister to if she were here in the room. He really didn’t even need to ask to know, her look said everything.
‘Well, I hope she didn’t make you into too much of a little hell raiser, kids are hard enough,’ And Karen would just give him a look that had ‘tell me about it.’ written all over it which would make him laugh. And Holly would ask:
‘How would you know? You only babysat me, like, three times a week and I was a little angel.’ And Billy and Steve would share a certain look which would have Holly demanding what it was for.
‘You weren’t exactly an angel at bedtime,’ Billy would begin to explain, soon to be followed by Steve chiming in, ‘Or when you couldn’t have an extra cookie out of the cookie jar.’ And Billy would agree with an ‘Oooh, yeah, or-’ Only to be cut off by Holly yet again.
‘Yeah, okay, okay, I get it I wasn’t the best kid, but that wasn’t my point.’ She would say with a hefty eye roll, which would remind him of Max yet again, ‘My point was that you didn’t exactly stick around long enough to come to that conclusion.’ And this would just pull at Billy’s heart strings and make him feel horrible,so obviously he’d explain.
‘I know, I’m sorry, Holls. It just wasn’t safe for us to stick around here any longer, and it’s not your fault. It’s just...’ And Billy would look over to Steve for help and Steve would give him wide eyes and a shrug like ‘well what do you want me to say?’ And before they could even say anything Holly would have the widest grin on her face as she connected the dots because the Wheeler’s were a pretty smart bunch.
‘You two! Ah! I knew it!’ and Holly would pull them both into a big hug, one arm wrapped around each of their necks. And Billy would be like,
‘No you didn’t, you were six years old!’ And Billy felt like there was no way any six year old, especially in that day and age would have figured out what they were doing behind closed doors, Wheeler or not.
‘I may have been six but I wasn’t dumb. What else would ‘You need to go to bed early so me and Steve can have private play time mean-’ And Billy would abruptly cut her off with a loud laugh, making the excuse that it had been so long that he memory must be mistaken. But then she would try to explain her more and him and Steve would excuse themselves saying that they had a lovely time but they had other stops to make.
