Although there has been informal discussion of this, I feel like it is proper to post a formal group hiatus notice. Alternate Origins is closing its askbox for now. Us mods have increasingly gotten busy to the point of mutual absence and we all apologize for this. However, we have noticed a few of our members are still active and we do not wish to take that away from you. Therefore you can continue the use of your blogs if you wish. If Alternate Origins is to reopen, you may re-app and re-obtain everything you had during your last stay here.
We apologize for how this worked out. We wish we could have done better as moderators, and if we come back from hiatus in the future, rest assured we will step up better next time.
On February 1st, Alternate Origins will be celebrating it’s third month open! Hooray! We are so excited and glad that we have been open this long, and couldn’t do it without you guys, our members. Stay tuned for a special prompt challenge later on this week... and maybe some rift shenanigans!
Additionally, we now have a news blog to keep you all more informed about the happenings in Dearu as well as allow you guys to get more involved with plots that are discussed and shown, as you may submit news articles and in-character business ads to our news blog.
For OOC news, in addition to this blog, we also now have a Twitter account, of which you can watch the Familiars bicker and banter on as well. It’ll be cute, we promise!
Lastly, we do have a change in our word count point policy. We did not take this change lightly, and anyone who has submitted an ask before this post is grandfathered in to the old system, but we have added a thread count requirement to the points system as well. Pretty much everyone who has submitted for upgrades has made these requirements, so we don’t think much will change!
We will also be churning out character-specific ads this week to try and garner more members, so if you have any characters you would like to see, please contact the mods through our promo blog, messaging the masterlist, using the @ function at our new Twitter, or messaging the mods directly. Apologies for the late affiliation update! Our affiliation mod (me) has been a lil’ busy but everything is up to date as it should be.
Just a few other reminders/notices:
The Festival of Lights event ends this Friday, you may continue your threads and earning your rewards for whichever half you choose, but you must choose the half to receive prizes from before the end of the event. Once the event ends you cannot create more threads.
There will be a policy change concerning our word count point system later on this week-- don’t worry, it will keep working the way it is so don’t panic about your count now being incorrect. There will just be a slight addendum in requirements for abilities regarding thread count.
In addition to our word count point system, we do have our referral point system! If you have gotten referral points prior to the Activity Check, if you passed the AC it is likely you are able to receive points again.
We are also always open to suggestions here at Alternate Origins-- if there is anything you would like to see us do in regards to our lore, let one of the mods know via askbox, Tumblr messaging, or messaging one of us privately.

Hello everyone! It is time for our first Activity Check. Since this is our first one, here’s the rules of it:
You must have made three in-character posts in the month of December or the beginning of January to count as active. These posts must be 50 words or longer.
Anyone that has not been in AO for a month yet will not be counted for removal, as they have not had the same amount of time to write posts as everyone else.
Anyone that is on semi-hiatus or hiatus is safe. These semi-hiatuses and hiatuses will not be valid for the next AC unless renewed.
You may reapply with no issue! (Some of you were only shy of being counted as active by one post, we don’t fault you!)
However, if you fail your next activity check, you will have to wait two weeks before applying again. If you reapply after those two weeks and fail again, you will not be allowed to apply for that character for another month. We do not tolerate “character sitting.” Although given it is our first AC, it’s really too early to judge that, so no worries!
All blogs that have been removed from the masterlist are underneath the cut. If we have made a mistake please let us know! We’ll reinstate you on the masterlist.

Due to discussion based on the mods, our first event will be extended for one more week, until Friday, January 22nd. It will end when it rolls over into the 23rd on midnight. What this means is you have up until the 22nd to create event threads from part 01 or part 02. You may continue these threads after the event is over. Also, whichever half you choose to multiply your word count points by 2 will remain valid for threads from that half that continue after the event, so choose wisely.
Also, this is an additional reminder that we will be having an Activity Check very soon. Our activity rule is that you must post three times a month, and these posts must be at least 50 words. If you do not pass the AC, you may of course reapp, but we will be monitoring for “character sitting.”
Hello everyone! I have some important announcements this week before we start heading into the second part of our Festival of Lights event! First and foremost, we have added a new way to receive points-- and this way can be divided among your characters however you wish unlike your posting points. It is our brand new referral system! The goal of this is to spread the news of our group and also reward those that do so. If you have any questions about it, feel free to ask, although we hoped we covered everything in our page about it.
Second, we are forming a group chat for AO so that it is easier to plot! We hope that it will improve member communication-- the group chat will be skype based, and there will be a URL incoming so you can use it on a web based system and come and go as you like rather than keep it up in Skype all the time (although if you prefer the latter you are welcome to do so.)
The group chat rules will be added onto our regular rules. They are as follows:
Any images must be sent through link rather than through the image attachment function, and any nsfw images must be accompanied with a warning. We will not tolerate linking to triggering content of any kind.
Please try to avoid triggering or hot button topics. This is a RP chat after all, we are meant to have fun!
If you have a disagreement with someone, please take it outside the chat. We do not want a hostile environment.
Any other courtesy rules that are within AO’s set rules list apply to the chat.

The time has come again for the Festival of Lights. A celebration of life, love, and happiness for the whole of Dearu to enjoy. Come to Frostias and take part in events that serve to promote unity and friendship, while also helping to keep you warm in the cold climate. Sports, games, contests, special local delicacies, all for the enjoyment of the festival-goers. After all, who doesn’t love a little bit of competition? There’s so many games and sports for everyone to compete in, just thinking about it all makes me start wanting to jump for j-

Share your time with others well. Enjoy the multitude of events. Visit one of the many ice-buildings that have been set up for the occasion. Eat, drink, and be merry. Let the lights bring us all together in the interests of peace and joy.

Hello and welcome to Alternate Origins’ first event! We’re very excited to bring this event to you, and hope that you all enjoy it! The Festival of Lights will be an annual event. It is always held in Frostias around the winter solstice, and is comprised of many activities, such as winter sports and arts competitions (at the professional and non-professional levels), a region wide snowball fight, a carnival booth set up in Frostias’s lower levels, and in the middle and top levels there are light displays. The light displays get more technologically advanced and creative as you ascend the mountain-- Frostias is the technological hub of Dearu, after all!
On the winter solstice, all the lighting displays in parks and on houses are lit, and lanterns are cast off cliffs of the mountains into the air to light the darkest night of the year.
The parks are also filled with many kinds of different ice sculptures, and the carnival booths host holiday foods of all kinds. While the Festival of Lights is Dearu’s winter celebration, they celebrate all sorts of different holidays as well. It’s not uncommon to see celebrations of other traditions.
Event FAQ:
Q: So in addition to celebrating Festival of Lights, can our characters celebrate other holidays from around this time of year?
A: Yes! Dearu is on Earth after all, if there’s a holiday that exists, your characters can celebrate that in addition to the Festival of Lights. Don’t fight too much on the Festivus airing of grievances though.
Q: Will the Oracle or the Familiars be around this event?
A: The Oracle doesn’t particularly enjoy the cold weather, but you could see a Familiar... If you’re lucky (or would that be unlucky?)
Q: Are there prizes?
A: The prizes are pending, you’ll have to wait until the event is over. We’re not judging threads or anything like that, but rest assured you will be awarded in some way if you participate.
Today-- well. Still today here PDT (no longer EST... sorry! I’m a little late), December 1st, is the anniversary of Alternate Origins being open for one full month! I am so glad we have made it this far still and we could not have done it without the help of our lovely and active members!
Reminder that we have messaging now, so any private questions you may submit through there. Additionally, our first prompt challenge closed yesterday. We will have another prompt up soon, and keep your eyes peeled for the Festival of Lights, which should be occurring later on this December!
Normally, this Friday would be our upcoming activity check, but given that we have only been open for a relatively short amount of time, we are postponing it to next month! Consider this our gift (albeit most of you lovelies are active!) If you don’t remember, our activity rule is that you must have three IC posts to be considered active, and they must be 50 words or more.
