Have you wondered lately why Discord link previews do not always load for @ao3org links?
I figured a lot of people are curious about this! Since I have been developing an AO3 link aggregating bot for my Bagginshield Book Club Discord server, I've been speaking with a volunteer on the Server team about the best way to handle bot requests in this difficult time. One of the issues I've run into is that the images for collections and series load intermittently, but also, unrelated to my bot, the link previews have not always been loading.
The answer lies in Discord's request protocol, and the limits that the server team has had to implement on all traffic but especially bot traffic of any kind.
On April 13th I got this reply:
we believe this is due to Discord not waiting long enough for responses from us. We are looking at increasing the amount of bot traffic we accept across the board which may help with this.
Yesterday on April 26 there was a public meeting of the OTW Board. (Did you know that anyone can attend these on their Discord server?) The second question addressed this issue!
