The more I watch this little gif, the more I love it.

I was angry at first, because a certain asshole did not participate, but now I realize that I’m glad Harry is not a part of this moment. I think it would have felt disingenuous if he had been.

This clip represents something powerful. This was a huge night for Louis. It was his first step away from One Direction to showcase music of his own and was his presentation to the world as a brilliant solo artist.

It was both wonderful and heartbreaking. Louis was starting a brand new part of his journey, but was doing so without one of the most important people in his life. This was a night of incredible happiness and unimaginable pain.

And the people in this clip. These are the people who love him. They love him enough to put aside anything else, including their personal “solo” images. It didn’t matter to them that this might be seen as a “reunion” of sorts. It didn’t matter that they would be photographed together for the first time in a year. It didn’t matter that people might talk about them as One Direction again instead of solo artists. It didn’t matter because it wasn’t about them. It was about Louis. It was about their friend, their brother, someone they had spent nearly everyday with for the past five years. It was about being with him for something so important and to maybe, even briefly, make it hurt a little less that his mother wasn’t there to see it.

I know that Harry was there that night, don’t get me wrong. But I think it speaks volumes to the content of his character, or lack thereof, that he refused to participate in this photo. Despite Louis losing his mother, despite performing his song just days after her passing, despite all of it, Harry only thought of himself first. He couldn’t be a part of this photo because it wasn’t part of the plan. This would have been a step backward for him. Re-associating with a band that he no longer wanted to be connected with. He was preparing to launch “Solo Harry” and he would do nothing to tarnish that.

I know some fans have already made excuses for him, but there is no excuse for this. Harry was there, but he still couldn’t bring himself to be human and think of someone else for just a moment. So when I call Harry an “asshole”, I’m not just saying it to be mean. I’m saying it because it is the only thing I can think of that truly describes him accurately. Just look at this gif. He isn’t there because he couldn’t be selfless even for a second. That is the epitome of an asshole.

So like I said, I’m glad he’s not in it. Because now it is a moment that is real and lovely. We get to see Louis surrounded by the people who really love him. And I think that’s beautiful.
