I’m not being dramatic when I say I truly believe Daisy Johnson is one of the greatest fictional characters of modern television.
This is not a commentary on MAOS as a whole. The show has been up and down, and sometimes just really down, but the ONE constancy it has is that no matter what garbage plot is thrown at Daisy, she shines through. She remains interesting throughout even the worst of episodes, and seasons I thought were so bad I just wanted to stop, I kept watching just to see what happened next with her. (Which I am so grateful I did, because season 4A has been the best I have seen since season 1, and season 5 looks like it will be even better.)
Daisy is unapologetically imperfect in a world where female characters are not allowed to be, but there is never a question that she is a hero. She can make huge fuck-ups but the writers don’t tease the Fallen Hero trope with her. She is allowed to suck sometimes and not have her legitimacy as a hero questioned. (This does not include the Hive plot because those were absolutely not her actions and she was being controlled.) She’s arguably the most complex fictional character to exist and she doesn’t need to be a villain to do it. People who say “Heroes are boring” can grab these hands, because they’ve never known Daisy Goddamn Johnson before.
And Chloe Bennet? What can I even say about her acting that could do it justice? She’s phenomenal. At this point I think she could do anything---be any character, play in any genre---and utterly dominate it. ABC likes to bring in famous senior Hollywood actors to get people hyped for the new season, and they look like children playing dress up next to Chloe. She’s such a powerful actor she owns every scene she’s in. Jed and Joss Whedon seem to have the ultimate hard-on for Clark Gregg and his character Phil Coulson, and act like he is the bread and butter of MAOS. But he ain’t. He’s got nothing on Chloe Bennet. This show would have been cancelled years ago if it weren’t for her. She must have chronic back pain from single-handedly carrying this show year after year.
If you’re ever debating watching MAOS (because LBR, there’s next to no hype for it, ratings have been lacking, and fandom response to each new season has been pretty polarizing) just remember this: You will be blessed and honored with the gift that keeps on giving, Chloe Bennet’s portrayal of Daisy Johnson. There’s no heaping pile of steaming garbage storyline the writers could ever create to drag her down. It’s impossible, she’s impenetrable. Watch for Daisy. Watch for Chloe. Be in awe.
