6: hardest/easiest character to write for?

As I said in the previous post, the hardest character for me is between Carson and Sadie. Carson because there's a fine line between making her actions understandable and her motivations tangible while being written from the eyes of someone else. And, admittedly, Carson is just hard to write sometimes because she hits a little too close to home now.

Sadie is another beast of character that I'm still trying to figure out.

One of the few people who doesn't use this passive-aggressively. Carson is nothing but genuine with her emojis. She tends to sprinkle her texts with smiley-faces.

Carson doesn't drink coffee. She always gets water if the gang decides to stop at Starbucks.

21: this character’s best/worst memory?

On the rare days she gave it some thought, her first memories of it all blurred together, overlapping, foggy at the seams. She didn't remember the precise dates, the hour or what week of the month it had been, how many nights passed — she knew only in the gaps.

She knew from missing the entire fourth week of school, from the two weeks she missed in late October, from the half-weeks through November, then all of December.

All of it, she'd repeat when the person questioning her would inevitably gasp in disbelief.

All of it and more, she'd say in her own head, angry for the two years she’d lost.

Her heart pumping in her ears had masqueraded the footfalls, her eyes focused on the gallon of water she'd plucked from the fridge. Exquisitely cold liquid passed from her lips to her parched throat, the wheezing and heaving of her breaths slowing down at last. Somehow, between her thundering heart, roaring blood, and heavy breathing, she heard her voice call softly from the doorframe.

"Hello?"

Carson would never tell her that she'd almost dropped the galon of water when she'd turned around

She'd downed half a gallon of water, but her throat was strangely parched when she met that dark, troubled gaze for the first time.

"Oh," she gasped, the tips of her ears red. "You must be—"

6: hardest/easiest character to write for?

The easiest is probably Lizzie, since her character archetype is the most familiar to me of the group. The hardest character... hmm, I would say it's a tie between Carson and Sadie. For Carson, part of it is simultaneously trying to get into her head so I can understand her motivations and actions throughout the book, but keeping her at enough of a distance to keep her a mystery from the readers. For Sadie, she's the closest metaphorical personification of the words "it's complicated."

9: what tv shows, books, or movies inspire for this verse, if any?

...Totally cheesy, but a core part of the book is inspired by Grey's Anatomy because I love that trashy show and I've been wanting to write something as cheesily heartbreaking as it since I was 15. The other inspiration for the book is essentially every heterosexual coming-of-age country to city girl book I've ever read, with a willful desire to make it gay. My 15 year old self would've loved one of those cheesy coming-of-age stories with a queer cast and str8s had them everywhere so it's been my somewhat spiteful retaliation. Above all else, I just plain wanted to write a mostly simple love story between two young women.

The day she and Carson can start a family, because this is a cheesy book and I am a cheesy person who wanted a cheesy ladygay romance.

Cinnamon dolce latte. Lizzie can't really lay off the sweet stuff, even less so when there's cinnamon. Whipped cream to top off a lovely espresso? Well, Carson's there to make sure she doesn't have a foamy mustache.

50: this character’s guilty pleasure?

Daydreaming about getting her girlfriend to wear the fluffiest, softest sleepwear decorated with bunnies. One day Lizzie will convince Carson to wear a bunny-hooded pajama top. One day!

21: this character’s best/worst memory?

The sound of the phone dropping to the kitchen floor overrode the sting of lemon juice on the cut of her thumb. She turned her gaze away from her throbbing finger to where the phone lay, still shaking from impact. She recalled, faintly, her mother telling her to always be careful handling the cumbersome object. The sound of someone's voice shouting from the other end was muffled by static, a buzzing obscuring the person's words. Lizzie finally raised her eyes to the only other person in the kitchen.

She hesitated, then lowered the measuring cup, half-full of lemon juice, and called softly, "Mama?"

Louise didn't answer, eyes faraway and face white as a ghost.

She hadn't noticed her fingers had stilled until Carson untangled them from the tangled mess of yarn, cupping her hands in her own.

"What are you thinking?"

The smile in Carson's voice coaxed a tug of Lizzie's lips and she sunk deeper into the warmth behind her, ear pressed against Carson's chest so she could listen to a faint badump-badump-badump beneath skin and bone.

Tucking her head under Carson's chin, she raised a hand and fiddled with a stray thread of lace on her girlfriend's wool sweater. A thousand and one words bounced in her head as she thought of how to respond.

Then, deciding on simple honesty, she said,

"That I'm happy."
