An Apathetic Group
So, I’m a Gen Z kid, the rising generation and all that. And most of the time, I’m honestly proud of our generation. Are we perfect, not by any definition of the word, but we’re making improvements in things that matter. We’re still pushing mental health awareness, we’re getting involved in politics, we’re raising our voices for the things we care about—sometimes. We’re trying, but it’s hard, and a lot of us have already given up. I was listening to a long-time teacher, a woman who has really helped me a lot throughout the last few years of my life, explain that so many of her students are apathetic. They stop taking math as soon as they can because why do they need it in the real world? Already, they seem to have lost the love of learning; they’ve already stopped trying. And part of the problem is the school system, the tests, the ridiculous expectations. Some of it is the seemingly dim future we have ahead of us. Why learn math if you’re going to be stuck in a menial job anyway? But some of it is us. Too many of us have given up. We’re tired, and so we’re done. But we can’t be. We just can’t. There is too much good that we could do for our generation to burn out now. And maybe we can’t have a fire for everything, but my hope is that we can all have a fire for something. So it’s not math, so you’re done with that. Do something else. Put your spark into something and run with it. And if you can’t run, walk. We are an apathetic generation, but we don’t have to be.
