Hello! I've always been drawn to the pacific northwest area of the USA, and that is where I plan to settle down. Obviously this isn't the perfect place to base your life around solar energy due to the long rainy season. Is there something in the same vein of Solarpunk for areas like that or are there simply different resources for it? Thanks for your time! (P.S. Congrats on France!)
You know, while solar may not be as good as in, say, Socal, I wouldn’t count it out too quickly. Different types of solar panel have subtle differences in the way they operate. For instance, thin film solar panels absorb light over a broader range of wavelengths than crystalline ones, meaning they work better in cloudy weather. Though in most circumstances, crystalline panels are more efficient and take up less space.
You may want to ask around locally about that, and maybe get a few quotes. It’s still entirely possible to power your home even in more cloudy places. There are plenty of solar panels in the UK too, and it’s not exactly the sunniest of countries.
Of course, you might also look into wind power. Particularly if you’re near the coast, the strong winds can be ideal for wind turbines. Or if you’re lucky enough to find a place by a river, a water wheel could generate power for you too.
The Pacific Northwest also has plenty of open space, so you could even consider constructing a cob house. I know I’d consider it. Though that kind of thing is probably not for everyone.
And thanks, but congratulations are a little premature. I’m still at the crossing fingers and hoping for the best stage right now. 😊
