This is becoming almost routine by now. I manage to keep cool. I do so by running a hand through my hair before I turn to face them, so that it looks okay, and then clearing my throat, and only then addressing them. "Hello," I tell them. I'm not sure why I keep trying to communicate with these people. Maybe ignoring them would be a better strategy? But what if they have some new, juicy piece of information for me? So I ask them about it. "Do you have anything I need to report?" I ask. And then I clarify, "I'm a reporter, you see. My name is Cecil. I'm sort of new here!"
And then I cringe, a little. Only sort of? More like really. I haven't even found my apartment yet!
