fragmentaryremains replied to your post “What are y'all going to dress up as for Halloween?...
Ooh! I've got an idea for Eleanor's costume. She could go as the ghost bride of the Banff Springs Hotel! I mean, they already host a Halloween event at the Rundle Bar there. It'd be perfect for her.
@fragmentaryremains
This is definitely an on brand idea - related but I’ve long thought that Eleanor has been able to see ghosts (and just mistakes them for regular people because she’s so busy that some rando in period costume is probably just normal for her).
I think there are a couple implications with this
- does she do this every year and does she modify it or keep it the same?
remembered one of my initiatives from september was to draw more eleanor and here she is!
this is a new sketchy painting process for me and im not sure if i like it or not yet because in a lot of painting i tend to over-render things but i think thats more a me problem than a painting problem, I'll try it out again :)
This is a very simplified height chart since I realize all the characters are suuuper stylized here (and wearing heels) but! Hopefully it will help me remember.
this page was Really difficult because I kept thinking fondly of my last time in Banff and all the things I did... life seemed so simple then ToT
@ americans i better not see any of you toodling around the national parks ‘on your way to alaska’ this year i swear to god, stop it!!!
the historic bathing suit and the hot springs INSTANTLY cured the situational depression i was having at the time and if i could bottle that feeling... (also the elk chilling around the parking lot helped too)

It is incredibly difficult to obtain permission to live in Banff, which has fixed borders and a small population of permanent residents. Living in Banff undoubtedly means having a job lined up and sharing accommodation with others. Keeping pets is highly discouraged.
Residents of Banff have a special responsibility to the environment and particularly bears, which means removing fruit trees from properties, disposing of waste in secure metal bins, and scheduling large, deliciously human scented furniture for pick up rather than leaving it out.
Banff is the highest elevated town in Canada at 1383 metres (4537 feet) above sea level. It is second only to the hamlet of Lake Louise, just north of Banff.
Banff is the southernmost location of Alberta's endangered woodland caribou. Recently, bison were reintroduced to the national park after being hunted to extinction in the area.
Ordering an ice water in Banff isn't just a taste of some of the highest quality glacier water in the world, it's actually a cocktail of gin and vodka. Of course, local breweries do use glacier water in most things on tap anyway!
Banff's famous Tunnel Mountain campground is kind of a misnomer. Canadian Pacific Rail did initially plan a route right through the mountain, but the tunnel was never built.
Forget your swimsuit? Rent a unisex, one piece historic bathing suit at the Banff hot springs for a dollar and enjoy the same natural remedy and breathtaking views as visitors in the late 19th century.

Calgary / Calvin
Eleanor sees Calvin more than any other municipality as he makes a special point to visit her almost every free weekend he has. Although the two rarely see eye-to-eye on political issues, Eleanor is one of the few people who can get Calvin to relax and reflect (even when it includes adrenaline).
Edmonton / Edward
Eleanor sees Edward occasionally when he needs an extended vacation or when Calvin drags him along for the weekend. She knows he tends to prefer recharging solo, but often finds herself supervising him on the trails because he's still hopeless when it comes to mountain safety.
Red Deer / Red
When Eleanor and Red are together, the conversation usually gets loud. Any time instantly becomes Ladies' Night when the two start talking, and they rarely seem to stop. Eleanor also doesn't own a car and usually depends on Red to chauffeur her where she needs to be, which she appreciates!
Lethbridge / Lilith
Eleanor shares a close proximity with Lilith as well as a sense of humour. While Eleanor feels she might never know everything about Lilith, it usually doesn't matter much as the two tend to have an "any way the wind blows" philosophy when it comes to spending time together.
Medicine Hat / Madeline
Although they are very different on the surface, Eleanor and Madeline are both long term thinkers who love the small-town life style. Eleanor is often one of the few people to see Madeline's wild streak on full display.
Grande Prairie / Josephine
Eleanor and Josephine tend to get on like a house on fire: both love trying new things, living a little on the edge, and having a good time in a large group. Eleanor knows that as much as Josephine moves from one innovation to the next, whatever it takes to get her relaxed rarely changes.
Fort McMurray / Mac
One would assume Eleanor and Mac rarely are civil on any issue as they fulfill polar opposite roles, but there is little malice in their relationship even when the sparks of anger start to fly. Eleanor would rather focus on building trust between them in a positive way.
Other Relationships
Because of Eleanor's unique position, she has a more direct relationship with Canada than the others. She is the most recognizable to other cities and nations around the world and is used to representing others.
Of course, Eleanor is also close with Jasper, the only municipality in the country to share her unique status and lifestyle. Even if tourist season becomes a little competitive, the two get along more with each other than with anyone else.
Eleanor’s key shape is a heart, a little bit soft and a little bit pointy (like the mountains, which are older and therefore a bit softer in comparison to Jasper)
I change Eleanor’s outfit slightly every single time I draw her. Today I’ve actually bothered to give her proper technical hiking boots and socks, etc. Generally, even though she’s capable of casual dress, she typically outfits herself for serious hiking every day. This means lightweight, insulating layers that can adjust to dramatic changes in temperature and are easy to carry (and have good coverage in case of ticks).
Banff doesn’t exactly have official symbols? I picked a few iconic things I felt like drawing that I thought were kind of representative.
Look, every single municipality save for three have their names on their flag and I refuse to incorporate that in my refs because its bad design!!!

Bio
Eleanor knows she is in a class of her own, even if she pretends she's unaware of this. When the world is at your doorstep and even taking out the trash is an adrenaline rush, every day is an adventure, and Eleanor intends to be present for every moment.
Banff, originally the humble Siding 29 along the planned Canadian Pacific Railway route, is a household name for world travellers. Eleanor grew up less interested in the railway connecting her to the rest of the world and more interested in the sanatorium patients who came for fresh mountain air and the warmth of the natural hot springs. She barely thought about incorporation until 1990 as the town's borders and permanent resident population are fixed, but has taken her place amongst the other municipalities in stride.
