AmePan Relationship Headcanons!
Hi, this is going to be my master list for headcanons, half for my own reference and half for people to enjoy if they're delighted to read through this. I was inspired by an AO3 work by he_avenly, which also lists their relationship headcanons; I'll be using the same questions they used, though I don't know where the original prompts come from lol.
This is mostly going to be centered around my historical longfic, The Flowering Dogwood, especially for any historical aspects. That fic is my personal interpretation of the Nationverse, so I'll be using some parts of the story as my personal canon. So, light spoilers ahead if you're still reading through it or haven't started yet but are interested soon! However, most of it is domestic bliss.

Was it love at first sight?
For Kiku, sort of. He believed Alfred would be a selfish brat who was nowhere near respectful, and that was half true. He was indeed a young brat who stumbled upon the beaches of Yokosuka with his commodore, utterly stricken by the island's "alienness." Of course, Kiku didn't appreciate his home being regarded as just "a foreign land" and was also forced to open up after being isolated.
However, as the Americans set up shop for their first week of diplomacy with the Japanese, Kiku found himself strangely enchanted by Alfred. There was a rightful hesitation from Kiku, given that his only glimpse of Europeans, and just white people in general, wasn't the most flattering. His only positive connection was Abel (Netherlands), with whom he had a sort of friends-with-benefits relationship. Abel was reserved, introverted, mostly aloof, and curious, but what Kiku liked about him was that he kept his distance and listened, even if he could be a bit pushy sometimes when it came to trading.
Alfred was nothing like Abel—loud, sort of bratty, eager in a childish way, and completely out of Kiku's range of "I can deal with these kinds of people." Kiku had every right to turn Alfred away, but why didn't he? He found himself drawn to Alfred's youth and naivete; it's not often he encountered youthful immortals, especially one who hadn't even been a nation for a century.
For Alfred, it was, by definition, love at first sight.
Alfred had never seen a beauty quite like Kiku when he first landed on the beaches of Yokosuka. It was a combination of many things, but it was mostly Kiku's looks that drew him in right off the bat, and then Alfred just knew he had to get Kiku's attention. It's almost like puppy love.
He tried to grab Kiku's attention any way he could. As a young lad, he thought the only way to really impress his fellow man was by being extroverted and strong, even though Alfred was about half the size he is now. He was a bit leaner and slightly shorter, merely because his nation hadn't hit its true zenith.
Alfred loved hearing Kiku's singing voice, his long, silky hair, his dancing, how he spoke, and just how graceful he really was in both movement and manner. It was the complete opposite of Alfred's more rugged approach to life. Admittedly, it was also Kiku's age and wisdom that made Alfred want to keep pursuing him while their first diplomatic mission lasted. I wouldn't say Alfred's attraction is solely rooted in his internal desire for a paternal figure... but I will say that it played an important part.
What feature(s) do they find most attractive about their partner?
Personality-wise, Kiku adores Alfred's cheer the most. His ability to remain optimistic is inspiring to someone who hasn't had a very good perception of hope or kindness throughout his life.
Appearance-wise, his blue eyes. They remind him of the Pacific Ocean, one that he has a deep admiration for. They also resemble a clear summer sky, especially one that's warm enough for Kiku to nap through the hours.
Personality-wise, Alfred appreciates Kiku's grounded and wise demeanor. For someone who doesn't make many wise decisions daily, whether at home or work, he really likes turning off his brain around Kiku and letting Kiku do the thinking for him. It's funny because Alfred is actually quite competent when Kiku isn't around, but the moment he's with his husband, all common sense and logic are shut off.
Appearance-wise, Alfred would say everything about Kiku's body, but he especially loves his hair. It's been a mainstay feature for Alfred; he finds it soft and rather comforting to shove his face into whenever he's stressed. Weirdly enough, he likes to nuzzle in it randomly, as if rubbing off his day's woes on him. Kiku doesn't mind; he finds it quite endearing.
Do they have any habits their partner finds annoying?
Kiku finds Alfred's tendency to just not use his common sense quite bothersome. He thinks it's cute that Alfred feels safe enough to essentially shut off all his instincts, but sometimes it can get on his nerves. Alfred can ask him the most basic questions, like, "What's my card number again?" It's a habit that he wishes Alfred would at least try to make bearable instead of being purposefully dense when he knows he isn't.
As helpful as it is, Alfred doesn't always like when Kiku tries to do everything for him. Cooking, cleaning, and washing dishes, especially at his house, feel like Kiku is trying to overwork himself. He wants Kiku to relax sometimes and not be so caught up in household chores, but it's a bad habit to break. He doesn't necessarily find it annoying, but more so concerning.
Is there anything about their partner they would like to change?
Even though Kiku finds Alfred's occasional density annoying, he wouldn't like to change a thing about Alfred. It's quintessentially him, and he wouldn't change that for anyone else.
Alfred desires Kiku to be a little more relaxed than he usually is. It's nice that he wants to stay on his feet most of the time and not feel unproductive, but he wishes Kiku would just come and be lazy with Alfred all the time.
Where did they have their first date?
Their first real dinner date was getting sukiyaki (hot pot) in Tokyo sometime in the 1950s. They had a side of udon and lager. It was actually Alfred's first real taste of Japanese food that Kiku didn't make for him. Alfred, especially, remembers it quite fondly because he was the first one to actually consider it a real romantic date. Kiku was more shy about the term, but he never denied it was a date.
When and where did they have their first kiss?
Their first shared kiss was at Alfred's birthday party in 1925, at a mansion somewhere in rural Maryland. After getting blazingly drunk and frolicking like children in Broad Creek, Kiku sat right by Alfred, sitting lakeside, and kissed him right on the cheek. Alfred vomited because of how intense his emotions were. Kiku remembers kissing him because he forgot to "bring him a birthday gift," but truth is, he's been wanting to kiss Alfred since the 1850s. It just seemed the alcohol made his inhibitions less severe.
Their first kiss on the lips was shared in November 1941 after dinner on Alfred's couch, which evolved into their first sexual encounter together. However, they don't like to speak about this incident.
How long have they been together?
Roughly 70 years if we're counting their first romantic date as a starting point. However, they've been yearning for each other for at least 170 years.
Will they stay together for a long time?
They both hope so. They complement and contrast each other in ways they didn't think were possible, but somehow their relationship, at the end of the very rocky road, turned out all right.
Do they have many problems in the relationship or just a few? Or none?
At the current moment, they have no serious issues, but at the beginning of their relationship, both unofficially and officially, it was laden with problems, mainly stemming from their collective traumas concerning love, vulnerability, and sexuality.
Is there a big age difference between the partners, a small difference, or are they the same age?
Big.
Alfred's national age would be 250 years old, but it's shown that he was alive longer than the signing of the Declaration of Independence. I wanna say that he's roughly 550 years old, counting his infancy and toddler years. This means he would've likely been born around the 15th century.
Kiku is just straight up old. His national age doesn't mean much because he's been alive longer than Japan, as a nation, has been around. He's about 2000 years old; he was born roughly in the 1st century AD. By the time Alfred was born, or learning how to walk, Kiku was already conquering domains in feudal Japan.
That's a 1,500-year age gap!
If someone disapproves of the relationship, who is it, and why do they disapprove?
It has always been and always will be Yao.
Yao's disdain for Western powers is evident, so you can imagine his distress when he found out his most precious charge is in love with and dating a white man, let alone Alfred, a.k.a. the spawnling of Arthur, the devil. He disapproved of their relationship even more so because he thought Alfred was an arrogant and culturally insensitive jerk, disregarding political connotations.
Expanding on personal grievances, he thinks Alfred is purposefully ignorant, and Kiku is letting himself be bossed around by Alfred too much. He loathes ignorant men, let alone white men who force themselves into their sphere of influence, partly because it challenges Yao's influence. But since Kiku is already an adult and finds Yao overbearing and naggy, he doesn't listen to his grievances or even his fair warnings about getting tangled up in a white man's sheets, especially one who has more power over him.
However, at the end of the day, Kiku isn't going to listen to him, but he will listen to his heart more closely. He supposes that as long as Kiku is happy and healthy, there's not much Yao can really criticize their relationship for, if it's not directly harming Kiku.
Does the couple care if people disapprove of them being together?
Kiku is stubborn and disregards Yao's warnings and disapproving rants about his relationship with Alfred, always claiming that Alfred "was different." It's sort of like a "but Daddy, I love him!" situation.
The funny thing is, Yao knew he was in a relationship with Abel and had the same qualms as before. They were significantly less scathing, likely because Abel wasn't openly arrogant or jerkish, and Yao had no personal issues with Abel; he was the first man to make Kiku happy, for however long their relationship lasted. Alfred's extroverted personality type might be the reason Yao doesn't like him so much, but he has his fair share of reasonable arguments against their relationship.
As for Alfred, he's aware that Yao doesn't like him, even if he doesn't act like he does. He treats and considers Yao like a cranky, never-going-to-be-satisfied mother-in-law.
Are they married?
Yes! They've been married for about 11 years.
Did they elope, have a small intimate wedding, have a big fancy wedding, or have something else?
Their wedding in the U.S. was a mix. Alfred wanted to make a huge spectacle of the wedding for the entire country to see once marriage was federally legalized. Kiku wanted to opt for a smaller, intimate wedding just between their friends and loved ones. So, they settled on a compromise.
They only invited a handful of people to a medium-sized venue. The wedding was sort of a fusion between a classic American Christian wedding and a traditional Japanese wedding. They tried to incorporate both cultures, but at some point, it started looking like a hot mess, so they just let a wedding planner do the hard stuff. Alfred wore a classic suit and bow tie, while Kiku wore a montsuki, both white with various flower motifs—Alfred with roses and Kiku with chrysanthemums and cherry blossoms, for obvious reasons.
Where did they go on their honeymoon or dream vacation?
They went to an isolated ranch they rented out in the middle of nowhere, Wyoming. It's been a collective dream to spend a month out riding horses and hiking through the American wilderness. It brings them both peace after their rather hectic wedding.
Do they have any children? Do they want any?
Alfred wants children, but Kiku doesn't, so they don't have any.
However, it's important to note that Alfred wants a child just as a kid wants a puppy, and he also prefers the child to be biologically his, but he was open to the idea of adoption. Well, adoption would be the only logical conclusion because Kiku can't be impregnated... Alfred still tries very hard to change biology, though.
Kiku doesn't want any because he knows he doesn't have a paternal blood cell in his body. He has no desire to change diapers, bottle-feed, burp babies, or save for their college funds. He can be a paternal figure, of course, but he's not enthusiastic about being the actual father of any child. He believes himself to be too old, too selfish, and too uncaring for a child nowadays. Frankly, good on him.
What is their favorite thing to do together?
Watch TV, whether it be a show, a movie, anime, or anything. It's their way of nerding out together over old low-budget flicks or cinematic powerhouses about Godzilla or the Avengers.
Where is their favorite place to go together?
During the summer, their favorite place is the beach.
Kiku believes himself to be too old, so he slathers on sunblock and sits under an umbrella atop a towel and reads. It's the ambiance of a beach he enjoys the most, you see. Alfred, on the other hand, has to be forced to stay still as Kiku applies sunblock before he goes sprinting off to the ocean and collecting seashells, swimming as far out as he can, diving as deep as he can, building sand castles, fighting with local kids, or trying to surf. All this to come back to Kiku and start ranting about something crazy whilst out of breath, like a child with undiagnosed ADHD. They'll get ice cream and hot dogs afterward.
For the cooler seasons, it's always home. Nothing beats the comfort of their own home and each other, not even a nice restaurant.
Do they have a song?
Well, it was a damn near perfect match when Buck Owen's Made in Japan came out. It was their song for at least 30 years straight.
Do they have any pet names/nicknames for each other?
Alfred loves pet names badly. His most commonly used ones are honey, hon, baby, sweetie, sweetheart, dude, and bro; his all-time favorite: honey-bunny-dude-bear-sweetie-pie.
Kiku decisively does not use pet names. He calls Alfred by his name, except when he's drunk; then it's usually "baby," but he says it in a drawling Texas accent for some reason.
Are they jealous?
They both can get pretty jealous, but Alfred is the most obvious.
If he thinks Kiku is being hit on, he tries to play it "cool" by bringing Kiku away from the situation and never actually elaborating on why, but Kiku knows. This happens most often when Abel is talking to Kiku because he knows he and Kiku used to be a thing, and he comes off as quite insecure or childish around him, which doesn't help Abel's image of Kiku's supposed dream husband.
Kiku's jealousy is quite subdued, but he also doesn't like Alfred being anything beyond friendly with strangers or potential competition. The thing is, he would never actually confront strangers like Alfred would, but he glares from across the room, and if he thinks they are trying to hit on his husband, he quietly diffuses the situation and asks for Alfred's time alone.
Is this a first relationship for either of them?
Alfred had a brief but passionate relationship with a human girl during the Revolutionary Era, and it made him realize why immortals don't have many relationships with humans. Other than that, he was still fresh and green in the dating scene.
Kiku had a previous relationship with a mortal girl that ended in tragedy, so he thought to avoid love altogether for the longest time until he met Abel. Abel was the first man that Kiku ever really let inside, and he cherished Kiku greatly, even believing they were soulmates, but Kiku ended that flame rather abruptly when he met Alfred.
How do they show affection for each other?
Kiku shows his affection through acts of service and quality time. He cooks for Alfred, sweeps and mops around his house, does both of their laundry, and generally keeps up the house so that Alfred won't have to break a sweat about it, especially when it's Kiku who's visiting Alfred in the U.S. He also shows he cares by going with Alfred wherever and being with him.
Alfred shows his affection mainly through physical touch and words of affirmation. Where Kiku lacks in physical affection, Alfred makes up for it. He constantly holds his hands, must hug or kiss him randomly, must always snuggle up to him, and, of course, make love to him.
How do they cheer their partner up when they're sad?
When Alfred is sad, it quite literally never fails to make him an entire feast to get his spirits up. After making him food, Kiku will then sit with him and let him rant about what's getting him down. He's not a therapist, but he can at least sit there and listen to his dear husband vent about his struggles.
When Kiku gets sad, he can be like this for days. Alfred's foolproof method is usually physical affection to the max, unless Kiku, at some point, expresses that he just wants to be alone. However, if he doesn't want to be left alone, Alfred ensures he feels nothing but cared for and adored, because it's true! He knows Kiku's been through more than a lot, so it does actually help for Kiku to know he can always retreat to someone's arms and cry into their chest whenever he wants.
Do they fight a lot?
They tease each other sometimes, but they rarely fight over something serious.
Who’s the big spoon?
Alfred. For obvious reasons, it's primarily Alfred. Kiku actually enjoys being the little spoon because it makes him feel safe and protected, and he actually sleeps the deepest every time he's the little spoon. He can be the big spoon, but it's a bit awkward when his husband is twice his size.
Who wakes up first?
No matter whose house they're at, it's almost always Kiku.
Who cooks?
Mostly Kiku. He usually takes on the responsibility before Alfred can even think of what to make for breakfast. However, Alfred does cook for him when he's allowed to, and Kiku thinks his cooking is quite comforting because of the abundance of predictable foods he can make. Also, Alfred just thinks Kiku is the better cook overall.
Who kills the spiders?
Kiku. Alfred is deathly afraid of insects, and he'd rather sob in a corner than kill a spider the size of a penny. Kiku just scoops it up with a glass, puts it outside, and then gets praised for being so manly.
Who’s the cuddler?
Alfred. His grip is super tight, but since Kiku is used to his tight squeezes, it's actually quite therapeutic. He quite literally treats Kiku like an oversized plush and squeezes his chest and puts his leg over him. He's essentially Kiku's weighted blanket and radiator.
Who is more protective?
Alfred.
Who’s more rational vs. who’s more impulsive?
Kiku is more rational, and Alfred is more impulsive, generally speaking. However, Kiku is more dramatic and thus more prone to being impulsive at times.
Who’s dominant vs. who’s submissive?
Outside of sex, they're equals.
During sex, it varies quite a ton. Generally speaking, Alfred is the dominant one more often, but it's mostly in terms of penetration, not necessarily demeanor. If Kiku wants to bottom and simply wants love to be made to him, Alfred would follow suit. That's usually how it goes.
However, sometimes, to spice up their sex lives, they play around with power dynamics, different positions, or other sexual practices, all with varying levels of dominance or submission from either of them. Sometimes Alfred wants to be a dominant top; sometimes he wants to be a submissive bottom, or a mix of both. It works for both of them. The most important thing is that they're happy and having fun.
Who’s a night owl vs. an early bird?
Kiku has an old man's sleeping schedule, so he usually goes to bed early and wakes up early. He usually heads to bed between 9 PM and 11 PM, at the absolute latest. He then wakes up around 4 to 5 AM.
On the other hand, Alfred normally heads to bed around the same time Kiku does, as he doesn't like Kiku sleeping alone without bone-crushing cuddles. However, on days off work, he can stay up late and just pull all-nighters playing video games or watching movies.
Who wears the other’s clothes?
Kiku sometimes wears nothing but Alfred's hoodies, especially after sex. He just feels more connected to him and cozy when he wears his clothes. He also quite likes just how big Alfred's clothes actually are compared to his smaller frame.
The last time Alfred tried wearing any of Kiku's shirts, he nearly suffocated.
What’s their most common argument?
They usually argue like geeks about shows or movies and whether a character deserved to die or if the plot was horrible. Nothing serious.
How do they make up after a fight?
Surprisingly, because of how emotional they can get during sex, it's almost always sex. However, it has to be missionary.
What’s your favorite headcanon about their relationship?
I love them all, and I love Amepan, and I will die for them.

So, this is basically my very self-indulgent Hetalia Portugal / female Japan ship headcanon.
Is anyone else shipping this? Probably few.
Am I still shipping it? Yes.
The first picture is 16th-century female Japan holding a gift for Portugal. In older Japanese aristocratic culture, people could send letters by tying them to a branch of flowers and giving them to someone. It was a very refined little ritual — not always romantic, but it could definitely be used to deliver a love letter.
So here, Japan is trying to do that.
And Portugal, naturally, has absolutely no cultural context for what is happening. So he just goes: “For me?”
That is the little interaction here. A very specific ship moment from a very specific historical period, with a very specific cultural background involved. Which is honestly exactly the kind of thing I enjoy about making Hetalia fanwork. You can take a historical encounter, turn it into a tiny personal misunderstanding, and suddenly it becomes a whole ship dynamic.
