Day 2 prompt comfort for @hetalia-rarepairweek 2023
Reflection in Black Waters (RusTurk fanfiction, mature)
If it hadn't been for Arthur, and Francis, and Roderich, Ivan would have realized his intention long ago – and the banner with the two-headed eagle would have fluttered over Hagia Sophia again. But his “friends” trembled more for the imperial “integrity” than for their own lives, even though that empire served them as nothing more than a market for their industrial goods. And even though progressive reforms had been going on for half a century, which were supposed to raise Sadik to the level of his enemies and readjust the state governance according to European standards, the inconsistency of those reforms and indecision of the court plunged Sadik even deeper into the abyss of crisis, turning him into a puppet – and serving as a bitter reminder to Ivan, what would have become of him if he had not…
Therefore, Ivan's surprise was so great when he heard Sadik's words that with his liberal reforms Ivan was only one step removed from him – and he froze, staring at his enemy.
___________
At the end of the victorious Russian-Turkish war of 1877-1878, Ivan realizes that he and Sadik have more in common than he thought – and the premonition of the impending collapse only becomes stronger.
