‘Don’t kick a man when he’s down’
New allies don’t believe yet while old ones already hate🤫 italy’s wwii experience
I listened to mcr for the first time (i like mcr now) + itabros (inspired by gangstalia ending and also ilya repin’s art piece ‘Ivan the terrible and his son ivan’ )
The Tale of the Feud and Loyalty (RusFin fanfiction), Chapter 9 (just published)
Tino's hands began to shake – and the storm that had only just subsided came crashing over him again in all its force. He sprang from the bed and strode toward Berwald, no longer able to restrain himself.
“No. I'm the one who's going to ask the questions! The ones that have tormented me since the very first day here, because you've only now deigned to show yourself! You're trying to interrogate me, to brand me a traitor – but what have I or my people, save for a very few, done that gives you the right to accuse us of treason?! Everything we did – we did because you were no longer able to protect my country! You told me so yourself! You apologized for it yourself! And now that I've finally acted instead of just listening to you, you dare to be angry with me?!”
Berwald's eyes widened in astonishment, then he flinched as though struck by a whip. Pain still lingered across his face when he finally managed to say, “You... your people turned not to just anyone, but to Russia – our bitterest enemy – in the middle of a war, and you don't understand why...”
“To Russia, because we believed they could stop the war and put an end to Gustav's reckless adventure! Who else were we supposed to turn to?! Was I supposed to endure it all in silence, to wait until your revanchism had had its fill, until the Russian army slaughtered my entire land?! Like some empty-headed blind fool who can't grasp that Stockholm would think of my people's suffering only as an afterthought – if it remembers us at all?!”
“Tino...” Whether Berwald had meant to say something or not, the force of the outburst left him speechless. There was nothing he could answer. From the tremor in his eyes, Tino realized this was not the first time Berwald had heard such accusations – and that it was Berwald who hurled them at himself first. But the faint stirrings of sympathy were swept away by rage, and the words that had tormented him for nearly fifty years poured from his lips.
“How dare you accuse me?! You promised you'd protect me, that no one could ever drive us apart. And I–I know you're not the king. I know that sometimes none of us has any power even over our own lives, much less over the actions of our people! I know the helplessness of your army against Russia wasn't your fault! But why have you sided with Gustav now?! Why do you think my officers are the traitors?!” Tears spilled down his face once more, and with them came the words. “Why do you think I'm the traitor?!”
There's one more chapter left.

He’s not great with words…
But How could he not think that she was hitting on him?
“The finest hotels of New York were adorned with American and Russian flags. Tiffany’s, at its location on Broadway between Prince and Spring Streets, unfurled a gigantic Russian banner that stretched the length of the building.”
“Throughout the following weeks, the Russians were continually feted by the grateful Americans. At a dinner with Mary Todd Lincoln and other American dignitaries, Mrs. Lincoln toasted the Russians for their kindness.”
“Russian dignitaries frequently met with Mayor George Opdyke and the Common Council and were wined and dined at virtually every hotel in town, including an opulent banquet at the Academy of Music in early November.”
In 1863, New Yorkers flocked to the waterfront to see a startling sight — Russian war ships in New York Harbor. They were here as a display

calm down bro Hetalia isn't that deep.
When you're trying to do serious research into the political history of Finland but your enemies are 19th century writers and modern historians so the entire thing ends up sounding like sufin and rusfin drama.
"Sweden and Finland were more like a love marriage while Sweden and Norway union was more like a marriage of convenience" - a swedish researcher in a documentary
"Finland was like a kidnapped bride forced into a marriage against her will", "Swedes acted like a jealous ex-husband who wished ill will for his ex-wives new marriage with his hated rival", "Finland was like a mistress who liked to show off her new bling she got from her new man" - a bunch of 19th century writers about Finnish autonomy
"And then Finland had an adventurous single life and open relationships with the Nordics, Baltics and Germany before ending up in a miserable relationship with Soviet Union" - a book about the separation between Sweden and Finland after 1809
I had to share this with someone who might appreciate it since it's just too funny that people were writing personified country drama in 19th century as analogs for what was happening in politics
People LOVE to anthropomorphize and humanize concepts. We’ve been doing it throughout history; from propaganda posters, national motifs in art, to political cartoons and satirical illustrations. Humanized countries have always existed, and they will always exist. Whenever you see people saying “they reinvent Hetalia every couple of years” honestly it isn’t much of a stretch. I’m constantly seeing new takes on country personifications, and people clearly find them entertaining.
Personifying concepts helps us understand and relate to them. Of course, it also simplifies complex realities and assigns human traits to things that aren’t human at all, which can be a slippery slope. But as long as we recognize that it is a simplification, there’s no reason they can’t be a creative and entertaining way to engage with bigger ideas (or even get introduced to them).
ANYWAY, I do have my fair share of trust issues with Swedish historians lol, but these interpretations are definitely interesting. I can see why they chose those examples and imo, they do a good job of conveying the overall situation. But my sociology brain is immediately drawn to the fact that they so universally decide to portray Finland as a feminine figure, like they're clearly articulating the nation's struggles through womanhood. Maybe the association is rooted in ideas of dependency, vulnerability and oppression, and those qualities are being mapped onto femininity here. Also the language, e.g. using the term "kidnap" is interesting, considering that the Finnish estates universally pledged loyalty to Russia in 1809. Hmm, is the Swedish ex really not at any fault here? But yeah, when you read Swedish sources or perspectives on the matter, there’s a heavy use of “the one that got away” language. There is a persistent, almost unspoken idea that if only things had unfolded slightly differently, we might still be happily together.
Honestly, I'd read these 19th century authors sufin/rusfin fanfic on AO3, drop the link!!!
i love being unemployed
It's such an interesting idea, at least to me, that human governments push their nations' immortality as far as they can. We see it in canon that Russia's boss forces him into situations where he is physically harmed. We see America's government refuse to tell him things, all while demanding his involvement in military action. But it makes me think, would the human governments of the United States and the Soviet Union manipulate their personifications into being used as test dummies for space travel?
The governments know just how deeply passionate (if not unhealthily obsessed) their personifications are with beating the other, and that personifications will always choose themselves to be harmed if it saves one of their people from being hurt or killed. It would be so easy for governments to convince a nation to use their human body as a test in early launches.
Do you want the Reds to win?
Do you want the capitalists to win? You know their nation is doing it.
Neither Alfred nor Ivan gives it a second thought, really. Not even a second is given to the question of "are we immortal in space? If I blow up/suffocate in space, do I revive the same way if I do on Earth? To stay immortal, do we need to have a physical connection to the Earth?"
These oh so highly secret missions of the early to mid-60s aren't known to anyone outside of a small group of space agency, government, and military officials.
No one knows what Alfred is doing until a NASA hr assistant accidentally calls Matthew a few hours before one of the tests because Matthew is listed as Alfred's next of kin and hr needs to confirm something, but this poor new hire hr employee wasn't told anything and thinks Alfred is just another human involved in secret testing. Gets the human blacklisted from federal employment for the rest of their life.
Ivan finally gets caught after a failed launch and the government practically dumps him on his sister's doorstep with a note to send him back when his skin comes back.

It would be very nice if there was one with America tied up (⊙‿⊙✿)
funny you should say that
"I can fix him" this and "I can make him worse" that. How about "I can make him more nuanced." I can keep him the same level of evil but bring out his more sympathetic characteristics, which humanize him without excusing his actions, and indeed highlight the depravity of his character by contrast, proving that ultimately he is only a man and thus all the more pathetic than had he truly been an inhuman monster.
