Male Arizona blonde tarantula (Aphonopelma chalcodes), on the trail at San Pedro House, Cochise County, Arizona. This was the largest tarantula I've seen here, with a body length of almost 4 cm (1.5 inches) and a 12 cm leg span. Once the annual monsoon arrives males begin rambling in search of sedentary females.

Did you know that the Arizona Blonde Tarantula (Aphonopelma chalcodes) is named after its blonde carapace? These spiders can only be found in the southwestern US and northern Mexico but are quite common in their native range, especially during rainy season.
Due to their hardy nature, calm disposition, and long lifespans (females can live for up to 30 years in the right conditions) they make common and popular pets among spider owners.
