So. I went out to grab a rose for Aphrodite on valentines day but but ended up getting these lovely potted Kalanchoes instead!
I've always liked the idea of giving living flowers rather than bouquets because they last longer. And in this case were much cheaper! I've never kept a house plant before and Kalanchoes are a large type of succulent flower, so they last a long time when well taken care of.
Why Give Houseplants as Offerings?
I'm a fairly new devotee, so I'm still getting the hang of offerings. If you are confused about Offerings for deities, I reccommend http://thepastelpriestess.tumblr.com who has a lovely podcast all about how essential they are to ones relationships with their deities, at least in the greek pantheon! So anyway, Pros:
Brings consideration for your deity into your daily/weekly life
Houseplants do a lot for peoples mental health! Plus I think people really underate how much getting in touch with nature can help ones spiritual experience. You can feel more connected to everything rather than just Divine beings.
I personally feel that the process of devotional activities, and the consideration and giving of offerings helps cement our own feelings of gratitude, as well as gives spiritual energy that Gods loves/benefit from. Imagine you are plant sitting for one of your best friends as a favor. You would want to take care of those plants because they make your friends life better, right? That's how I kind feel about it, except I am sharing the plant with my lovely Aphrodite🥰🥰🥰.
Also the money you would have spent on an offering goes a lot longer of a way!
Since Kalanchoes are a succulent, I had to depot them, take out the potting soil and replace it with succulent/cactus soil. I am a poor ex college student, in debt, and cant afford such things so instead I got resourceful! Apperantly pine bark mixed with 1/4" gravel and a little sand was considered succulent mix. So I spent an hour gathering fallen pine bark and gravel in my backyard, ground up said bark and refitted the plant in the plastic draining pot. I felt super proud of myself for the resourcefulness! Itll be a couple weeks till I'm able to see how the plant takes it but I'm super excited to find out!
Anywho, you can go really crazy with devotional plants, depending on your deity and financial means. You can buy plants that are sacred to your specific deity or are in their symbolic colors. Or if you arent able, even just digging up a plant in your backyard and learning how to take care of it can work. As long as you are putting time and effort into caring for it for your deity, and it isnt getting in the way of your life, your deity shouldnt care. Just do what you can!
So do any of you have devotional plants? Or even something you take care of everyday for your deity other than an alter? If you do please reblog with a picture for me, I'm curious!!!
