Tannen says, “Some days you just want to get dressed and go about your business. But if you’re a woman, you can’t, because there is no unmarked woman” (Tannen 415). I agree with Tannen’s claim. In my own life I am marked everyday. I consider myself an athlete, and an athlete where’s athletic clothes. However when I go to school I feel like I need to prove to people that I am also a girl. Every morning I actually think about what I wore earlier in the week to make sure I have a balance between cross country T-shirts and actual clothes that would be considered cute. I do this because I am marked by my classmates and teachers. I am a teenage woman, so people expect me to be something. However everyone has different expectations, my friends want me to look cute, my teachers wants me professional, my team wants me to support them. However I can’t do all of his at once. A girl will never fulfill the expectations placed on them causing them to be marked. I was actually listening to a song called If I Were a Boy, and it says, “If I were a boy, Even just for a day, I’d roll outta bed in the morning, And throw on what I wanted and go” (Beyoncé). I think that if a famous singer, a popular writer, and an average student all agree that females are always marked, it must be a pretty common thought among the woman in America.
