Definition: an organized civil force for maintaining order
The "po po", "the Fuzz", "Coppers", no matter what you call them,or how much you hate them, they keep society running smoothly. But the word police itself, dates back to the 15th century. Branching off from the Latin word politia, meaning "civil administration". The word did not come to how we know it today, until 1798. The first force was named Marine Police in England, to protect merchandise at the Port of London.
