What would Orwell Think?

"Like travelers with exotic destinations on their minds, the graduates were remarkably forgetful.  They came to school without their books, or tablets, or even pencils. Volunteers fell over themselves to secure replacements for the missing equipment."

I think that Orwell would have hated this excerpt for a few reasons.  One it is very vague on details and specifics. She could have been way more specific on the why's.  Why were other destinations on their minds? Why were they forgetting their school supplies? Why was there missing equipment? Orwell would have also hated the lack of precision.  Where are the exotic places? What was the missing equipment? This is why Orwell would have hated this passage.

Orwell would be horrified of Maya Angelou's "graduation" because she is uses a lot of metaphors to make her point. Orwell is all about short and to the point sentences and he doesn't like to beat around the bush.

I believe that Orwell will like Maya Angelous "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings" because of the structure and moral of the story. The main character in "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings" is Maya and she has to repeatedly lose her identity because she was black. In Orwells "Shooting an Elephant" Orwell lost his identity because of pressures from the people around him and him being in a position of power.

What would Orwell think

George Orwell likes to be straight and to the point, while in Graduation, Maya Angelou uses vaguer-than-usual symbolism which I think that Orwell wouldn't like. Graduation has fairly low diction and Orwell tends to use higher diction, while these differ from one another, I feel that Orwell would not be bothered by this aspect of Angelou's piece.

What Would Orwell Think

I do not believe that Orwell would very much appreciate Angelou's essay “Graduation.” For instance, Angelou uses a lot of “fillers,” or “fluff” throughout her essay. Orwell much prefers a writing piece to be precise, and to the point. However, in Angelou's piece, she does nothing but ramble on and provide unnecessary detail. Angelou filled her essay with nothing but figurative language, something that Orwell would not appreciate.

What Would Orwell Think?

In Maya Angelou's essay, "Graduation", Angelou makes sentences longer than they need to be. An example would be "Anything higher that we aspired to was farcical and presumptuous." Orwell would disagree with Angelou's style of writing because he believed sentences should be short and precise to get the point across. And though this sentence is descriptive, it needs to be shortened because it is unnecessary to prolong a sentence that can be summed up in a few words.

In Maya Angelou's "Graduation," she uses a lot of figurative language such as "But the graduating classes were the nobility." and "During that period I looked at the arch of heaven so religiously my neck kept a steady ache." Although these successfully fulfill her purpose, Orwell wouldn't like it because they just add more words and make the actual message less clear. Orwell thinks that if an idea can be expressed in fewer words then it should be.

I believe that George Orwell could possibly like some parts in graduation, however I don't know if he would necessarily agree with the writing style used. Orwell writes very precisely has close to no fluff in his writing, "Graduation" uses many examples of figurative language. Orwell would probably write-off "Graduation" as simple or thoughtless and not intellectual enough for his liking.
