@apocketfullofmuses here we go again
Matt and Felicity didn't even have to discuss whether or not they'd go to Fisk's Black & White ball— the invitation had been nothing but a way to taunt them after kidnapping Felicity and Sophie. Matt wouldn't let his wife anywhere near him again. But then something changed— one bad day had finally been enough for some pieces to connect in a very interesting way, and it ended with Matt in the waiting room to see Poindexter, calling Felicity to let her know they actually needed to go.
He promised he'd explain it later, and he hated to put her in that position, but he didn't have much of a choice— the invite had been for her, not him. He'd need to be her plus one, and for that, he had to put her in danger again.
He had every intention of being there on time, but the wait to talk to Poindexter had been long, and so had the ride home to change. By the time he finally made it to the ball, he was a full hour and a half later, and couldn't be more relieved when he found her.
"Hey. Sorry, I'm late," he said, pressing a kiss to her forehead as he reached her. He could hear Fisk talking to someone in the next room. He had some time. "And sorry I pulled you into this, but something's off. I went to talk to Poindexter, and I don't think him killing Foggy was random. I think Fisk had something to do with it. This was the only way I could get to him." He said it all in one breath, barely paying attention to anything else until he actually stopped to check on her. He could taste salt in the air— she'd been crying, and he could feel her shivering.
"Honey, what's wrong?" Fisk did have her trapped in a cage until a week ago, which could explain it, but Matt doubted that her just being here was what caused it. "Did he do something?"
