Repost @lowfrequencyoutput Apo setup! Started stage and parachute bar build, and learned how to set up mesh fences. Great start to the week. Can't wait for the rest of the setup later this week, and to see it all in action come Friday! If you are going to Apogaea, come see me at camp Event Horizon! #apogaea #burnerfamily #burningman #regionalburn #shitgetsweirdinspace #coloradomusicfestivals #eventhorizon (at Trinidad, Colorado) https://www.instagram.com/p/ByTxodKAR1c/?igshid=1fbk6uo7xpakj
DIY
The other day I was taking apart a pair of electroluminescent-wire fairy wings that I’d bought once like 15 years ago, from an even more experienced Burner who had made them himself. And it occurred to me that “back in the day” there was a lot more of this hand-building of costumes, tech, art, etc. You couldn’t just buy light-up jackets, shoes, wings, accessories, etc., like you can now--so you had to make them. So many hours I spent in the past soldering el-wire, sewing it into costumes and bikes...but in the last ten years or so I’ve gotten away from all that work (and maintenance) in favor of just more practical clothing, camps, and so on.
Another example: I have a 16′ geodesic dome sitting in my garage, that I used to bring to festivals, but I haven’t brought it out for a long time; instead we use a tent and a pop-up 10x10 shade structure, or if it’s a longer festival (like Apogaea, which is about four days instead of 2 1/2), I’ll put up the 10x20 carport, which is not as “DIY” but is a more practical space. It seems that in the old days at BM, Apo, etc., there were more domes, “tensegrity” setups, bedouin tents and such, and fewer $120 Costco carports.
This is not to say that there aren’t people out there that spend so much time and effort building their own amazing stuff--there are. And maybe it’s different because I mostly go to the Colorado festivals, where practicality (cold, weather) is more important that it would be out on the playa. Or maybe I’m just describing my personal experience of moving away from glam to practical. But it does seem that as LEDs and el-wire and other types of gear become more ubiquitous and available in the default world, it seems like there’s more of a move towards using those rather than painstakingly making one’s own...
