Re: the last post, the article mentions that some places use clams to test the toxicity of the water. It’s like that in Warsaw- we get our water from the river, and the main water pump has 8 clams that have triggers attached to their shells. If the water gets too toxic, they close, and the triggers shut off the city water supply automatically.
The clams are just better at measuring the water quality than any man-made sensors.

I'm reading a lot of Trump supporters/virus deniers writing stuff along the lines of "Where was all the criticism of Obama when H1N1 killed 100,000?!" Or "The flu kills 17,000 people a year, and this has only killed 300!"
How is it that these people do not understand that this has just started, and there are going to be *lots* more deaths to come? Do they not understand how linear time works?
TIL: The "ablative absolute" is a conjugation in Latin in which a subordinate clause defines the circumstances or situation in which the action of the main verb occurs.
With these words having been said, Caesar departs. With the letter having been received, Caesar departs. With the lion having been seen, the women departed.
I really liked reading the first of the Charlie Mortdecai novels by Kyril Bonfiglioni (Don't Point That Thing at Me). Crime thriller, but with a real Wooster/Jeeves vibe.
I do like novels that have so many obscure trivia/vocabulary/references that I need to make a list to look up when I get a chance. Some of the things I had to investigate from the first book: a white lady cocktail (gin, triple sec, and lemon juice); pococurante (a person who is careless, indifferent, or just lazy); Teller mines (WWII German anti-vehicle mines); kedgeree (a dish with rice, curry, eggs, and smoked fish); poephage (a grass eater); Tsarskoe Selo; Ratty & the Sea Rat (characters from Wind in the Willows); nates (buttocks); Bohea (a fancy tea); and zizz (a nap).

Tell the fish hook story, Dan
Police always contend that they're following procedures when they cause the deaths of innocent people but they never seem to acknowledge that they are the ones who established the procedures in the first place and therefore they are responsible for the outcome either way. Following rules that you yourself created doesn't exonerate you from the consequences of following those rules.
