a new documentary on the lives of women in gaming who, against all odds, punched through the peripheral shadows and entered the gaming world center stage.
Some of my favorite people in gaming media (Cat Despira, Patrick Scott Patterson, Natalie Rossett, and Dave Danzara) are making a documentary about kickass women in gaming!
If it was another team of people, I’d be hesitant but Cat Despira carved her place in the arcade world with one giant “fuck your boys club” to become the top retro gaming journalist. Patrick Scott Patterson has been a consistent supporter of women in gaming for YEARS (see his “women of gaming" series).
This will not be a documentary about “gamer girls!” This is going to be a documentary about strong, brave, passionate women blazing past the sexist barricades erected by the gaming community at large to grab it by the balls and say “I’m here. Let’s play.”
It’s a documentary about competitive gamers. World record holders. Collectors of arcade games. Critics of gaming culture. And guess what? They’re all women.
The film is currently in the very baby stages of development.
