November 27-28, 2009 -- I can't quite comprehend why one has to repeat a feat, which involved nothing but pain, muscle aches, scorching heat, soaking cold rain, sliding in the mud, and scratches from everywhere. All of this for a few hours of escape to reality. Stressing oneself to get rid of stress. It's quite bizarre.. It must be man's masochistic instinctual need for suffering! and it's BEAUTIFUL!!! hehehe!!!
So it's my second self imposed suffering on this beautful Mt. Talinis. It's a far cry from our party of 9 before, this time we came in at 33 strong. A salad bowl of characters from our group; Petix, our fellow "Stream" colleagues, the nurses from USPM and Chong Chua, the medical men from CDU, and our 6 wily guides.
Expectantly, I was beaten down during the ascent. I'm not complaining this time. hehehe!! For some, it's their first time scaling a major mountain. For me... I was kinda aware what was coming so I'm not gonna complain this time.hehehe! A few minutes on to the climb the mountain quickly imposed itself, an initial 2 and a half hour assault is underway. Some are catching their breathe with tongues out, some turned white, and I was wondering why in the hell, I'm repeating this ordeal, and this time with a bigger camera. So much for light packing. Now I was starting to complain! hehehe! So after 3 and a half hour of struggling to steep terrain, passing by the ridge, we finally reached Lake Yagumyum. An hour lunch break, pelted with the cold rain and alternating sunshie dind't dampen our spirits. With our tummies filled, of we went to the next target: Lake Nailig. After a quick U turn, another 4 hours of trekking, struggling through mug and maze like vegetation, we finally arrived at Lake Nailig. I was surprised to find out that the lake got bigger and the camp site smaller. Our previous campsite was eaten up by water, so this time we camped at a little bit higher ground.
As night time approached, we prepared (for the second major climb running) Pork Mechado? or Afritada? anyway it was delish! Such a welcome meal after a tiresome trek. To top it off, we brought some a few cans of beer - 3 to be exact. It's the RED HORSE of course! Just enough for a good night's sleep. Alcoholics!
After an 18 degree evening. The morning was still chilly and foggy. We broke camp at around 9 PM, and onward to another round f trekking. Fast forward to 2 hours.. we reached the Kaipoan Sulfur Vents, this place is a bit errie, kinda reminds you the realm of Sauron from Lord of the Rings. It's Mordor!! hehehe!! The air stinks of sulfur and the trees are strip naked, there's a dead mice lying around and got a photo op with it. After the stinks, we reached the "Rancho" it's the only house that you can find on the heart of the mountain. Lunch stop was at the stream, some of the peeps took a cold bath and a time to clean their muddy clothes. Feeling recharged, we strode to the last leg of the climb. The trail was never-ending it's a very very very long walk!! Amazingly out of nowhere there's a bench, camped on one of the exposed part of the trail, a very welcome spot to rest and another round of photo op! hehehe!! Then after about 1 more hour the never-ending trail finally ended... T'was a great climb!!! As expected everyone was tired. Time for a Cold Beer!! and a very Big Meal!!! enjoytheview! Ü
