Dockhunt is a new way to discover Mac apps by looking at other people’s docks
App Store might suggest you a useful app from time to time, but you can’t rely on that to discover new apps. Places like Reddit communities or Product Hunt could also be very broad for what you are looking for.
So a team of engineers at Basedash, a startup that helps companies connect their databases to admin panels, made a product called Dockhunt that lets you discover new Mac apps by looking at…

It’s so great to have somewhere to talk to people about the parts of yourself that you used to be ashamed about. To realize that no one is going to judge you for being you and to feel safe to just be honest about who you are…it’s an amazing feeling that I wish I had all of the time. :)

I am going on my 5th year in this niche, I think by now I’ve got a clue of what’s happening ... and what should be happening.
No matter if you’re an iOS, Android or Windows Phone user, app discovery is a nightmare across all platforms. It’s painful, biased and as long as people keep downloading and buying apps, the hosts will definitely not care about fixing it.
For those who wish to join us in app discovery - or are already in it - here’s some food for thought. In my opinion, these are the main four points that would immensely improve the app discovery experience for everyone:
Deeper Categorization
There are too few categories to make apps searchable. A solid categorization system would allow for better referencing - much better than any keyword or description could ever be!
Searchable feature lists
Nowadays, people like to find an app based on very specific features. There should be a way of specifying every key feature of an app (i.e. a calendar that offers location-based reminders, recurring tasks and to-do lists), so that users can really narrow down their search to those apps that really fit their needs.
Usage tracking instead of app reviews
As much as people care about apps, they do not care about sharing them. Unless you are a complete geek, you won't (regularly) post your app updates on your Facebook wall. User behavior and app usage should be tracked on the device, and shared with others, so that you really know which apps people use. This also eliminates the need for app reviews, and the chances of faking them.
Contextual recommendations
Why should one have to search for an app. Let the app come to you! Think about it -- It'd be nice to get app recommendations and suggestions at the right time. Travelling to London? Here are the best apps for London. Birthday of your son next week? Shop in the ToysRus app. There are millions of options.
