I've gradually lost interest in physical travel over the years. I prefer intellectual exploration. It dawned on me only recently however that I could convert holiday time into intense private development time.
5 days off, plus 2 days either side: 9 days of focused uninterrupted software communication, design and engineering. I’ve started to use the term Appathon around friends and colleagues to describe it. It’s a term that’s already sticking quite well.
Suddenly I’m excited again about taking holiday time off work. What’s more, it’s a great way of balancing risk - you don’t have to quit your job, yet can still focus intensely on making something for a while.
I’m planning away this month with new-found vigour and excitement. For my first Appathon next month I’ve got a very clear goal: to build and ship an app within 9 days. It’s a simple product that’s been on the table for a while. I can’t wait.
