Complete first chapter of my new comic Mira Purcell Girl Detective. Now with updated scans.
These pages were part of my studies of action scenes and features two of my original characters: Rey Espinosa and Mira Purcell. Some might recognize them from my early Apple Face illustrations. I have these characters for years and I really want to do something big with them. But I might need to complete a few one-shots first before doing anything ongoing.

Cover page for my new comic, Girl Detective Mira Purcell. It will be the first story featuring one of my original characters, girl detective Mira Purcell. I'm a big fan of detective fiction like Raymond Chandler and Rampo Edogawa. In Japan, the Boy Detective genre was very popular during the 60s, but I decided to give it my own unique twist. There’s more to come!
Time is getting tight and the art blog is still in the works. But for the time being, I’ll post some samples of what might be seen there as soon as I have everything set. These are characters I created back when I was in high school for a comic called Apple Face. More than a decade has passed and I decided to bring these characters back and add new ones because I was still fond of them. A lot of rework was done to the point there’s little resemblance of what I had in mind back in the day.
These illustrations were all done somewhere around the past few months and are presented in the order as they were originally created, so there’s subtle differences as I developed my personal art style. In my art blog I might discuss some evolution these characters went through since I first came up with them. My art style used to be a lot closer to Shotaro Ishinomori to the point it lacked its own identity, so I needed to work my best in order to find the right look that would be better suited to them instead of a mere carbon copy of someone else, especially for someone as big and influential to me as Ishinomori.
Apple Face is a very personal creation to me to the point I still don’t feel prepared to work on it full-time as there’s a lot I need to mature and develop to become a real artist and creator. Still, I might give hints of what’s in my mind while presenting a little of these characters for the first time outside of close friends and family. This is only one of the few projects I’m currently working on, so while the start of the Apple Face series is still a little far away, there’s still a few other works I intend to start posting right away on a consistent schedule. For the time being, this is everything I can tell. If everything is alright by the next time I post, I’ll have my art blog working and running. So, see you until then!
René Magritte’s “The Son of Man” (1964) finds a precursor in the bumble bees of the Kashmir Himalayas. Our image (left) is from 1954 and appears in the Bulletin of the British Museum (Natural History) Entomology. It goes without saying that “Apples depend upon bees to pollinate their flowers so that the tree will develop fruit.”
