Timeloop au where dream gets to go back to his childhood and stop the apple incident, but the only way to break the loop is to let it happen
okay so what if corrupted nightmare and shattered dream were both in like a T.K.O. situation. like they go through an event that traumatically brings all of their buried negative emotions to the surface as a tangible Second Being in their mind but they're still both the same person just sharing a mindscape now and kind of fighting for control of the same body
although maybe nightmare lets that being take control more easily, being too tired to fight it and wanting to just sleep and let that entity/manifestation of his negativity take control after everything that's happened. it feels safer to do so and safer to just leave the control of his body to this being that said it would protect him.
while dream on the opposite side of the spectrum is fighting a lot more and refusing to accept that that being is him and was created from a mix of the apples and his own consciousness. he's also been conditioned to think that he's not supposed to have negative emotions and isn't supposed to hurt or hate or be upset at anyone so it feels more like a foreign entity that's not supposed to exist to him. (a lot like how k.o. and t.k.o worked)
i think they'd deal with things in oppositely unhealthy ways with dream being severely afraid of his own negative emotions/thoughts and trying to force-wrestle control back and keep himself under lock-and-key and nightmare giving up control entirely and letting everything go to his negativity
